Joint opposition MP Bandula Gunawardena is seen dashing coconuts outside the Sri Maha Kali Amman Kovil in Modera today, seeking the blessings of deities to save the people from the economic burden resulting from the VAT increase.

This campaign is also to make people aware of the economic crisis faced by the country.

The three 'eyes' of the coconut represent the three eyes of the great god Shiva. This is used in the ritual of worship and adoration of the gods. In South Asia, coconuts are named sriphala or fruit of the gods and they symbolise complete usefulness, selfless service, prosperity and generosity. I wonder whether these so called educated minister is aware of what is he doing rather than copying some religious ritual.
