Ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's party, the United National Party (UNP), said on Saturday it would file a case in the Supreme Court against the early dissolution of Parliament by President Maithripala Sirisena.

UNP Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera told journalists that the party would early next week file a challenge in the Supreme Court, calling the President's decision to dissolve Parliament "illegal", Xinhua news agency reported.

A group of UNP legislators on Saturday met Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya and discussed the dissolution of Parliament and urged him to take steps to "save democracy".

Meanwhile, the main opposition Tamil National Alliance and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna will also be filing cases in the Supreme Court against the dissolution of Parliament on Monday, their party spokespersons said.

Sirisena late on Friday signed a special gazette notification dissolving Parliament and declaring January 5 as the date for a snap parliamentary election.

The President said Parliament would stand dissolved from Saturday 12 a.m. and nominations for the parliamentary elections would be called from November 19-26.

Sirisena's move to dissolve Parliament came one and a half years ahead of the scheduled parliamentary polls.

Sri Lanka has been facing political turmoil since October 26 when the President sacked Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and appointed former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the post.(IANS)

If it is taken up at the Supreme Court it is hard to imaginethe merits of the argument would become the deciding factor in the conclusion.

If all remembered that 20th amendment JVP tabled in parliment some time ago to scrap presidents powers etc etc. Today is a different ball game all together. Today UNP is suffering from their top leaders blind decisions. What to do sir??.

If the election goes ahead as gazetted, the media, especially TV channels that reach all areas of Sri Lanka, should provide unbiased coverage about all MPs which include crooks, culprits and thugs, so that all Sri Lankans are enlightened on whom to vote… at least this time ..!This can be the first step in making Sri Lanka better ...!(Won’t be surprised if the MPs who deserve a vote is less than 5%)Good job Daily Mirror for being unbiased..!

it is undemocratic to have election with short notice since it won't allow all parties to prepare for the election. MR has become MS's remote control. Everything MS is doing is according to MR.

People should read the Riot Act to the President and others who support the dissolution of the Parliament appointed by the people of Sri Lanka. Someone can be stupid but if that person is stubborn that person is called a moron. That what we see in the Leaders of Sri Lanka.

Dissolution is allergic to you why because you know you did nothing but postponement of due elections. Going for election is the most democratic way as sovereignty is vested with us. Be ready to go into wilderness.

JVP maraya, TNA out dated , when UNP kept postponing PC elections, when TNA was made Opposition whilst Joint opposition had much more clout, UNP selling state assets as if private sadly very much under value without proper process, selective justice, etc etc

Ranil Wickremesinghe, Mangala Samaraweera and the UNP can go to the Supreme court but the Supreme Authority lies with the people of Sri Lanka. TNA will always follow the orders of LTTE diaspora abroad supported by the handful of western nations who address themselves the international community which consists of 193 countries!Face the Sri Lankan nation and let the people give their verdict at a general election and stop interfering in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation.

I don’t get it cos, Elections are only globally acceptable way for Democracy and policitical parties like UNP, JVP and TNA who advocate for democracy are against elections. The answer is simple, these parties are scared of the public polls cos simply the UNP and JVP will be whipped out of Parliament by MR in South and TNA will be slashed out in Parliament by Pro Wigneswaren in North and East of SL.

Sirisena is acting like a maniac on the expense of the voters who trusted him and taking the country for distruction just for his personal gain. He had started his own downfall because one he falls over even there won’t be anyone in Mahinda’s family who is going to trust him .

You've got to be kidding me? Why these people are so afraid to go the public??? Last 3 and half years been the worst time in the country. People need to decide. All the elections had been postponed under Yahapalne.. People's agents are afraid to go in front of people to ask for vote? So whats the purpose of democracy? If all these parties did a good job they will be re elected. why worry ??? No matter what JVP will be at " 0 seat" in the next election
