The temporally ban imposed on a surgeon from England at the Karapitiya Hospital preventing him from conducting surgeries was lifted last evening on a recommendation made by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), Karapitiya Hospital Director Dr. Jayampathy Senanayake said.

He claimed the British doctor was suspended from performing heart surgeries pending a determination from the SLMC on his practising license.

Dr. Senanayake told Daily Mirror that the issue had been taken up after several doctors attached to the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) observed that the British doctor did not have a licence to practise in the United Kingdom (UK) as it needed to be renewed from time to time.

However, Dr. Senanayaka explained that the said doctor had since obtained SLMC permission to perform surgeries in Sri Lanka and could resume his duties henceforth and added that the SLMC had the sole authority to decide on it.

“The GMOA were threatening to resort to trade union action if the authorities failed to take action against this doctor. In the UK, it is necessary for doctors to be registered with their Medical Council. There is also a practising licence which needs to be renewed periodically. However, unlike in the UK, only the SLMC’s certification is needed to practice medicine in Sri Lanka,” he said. “Another claim of the GMOA is that the said British doctor was too old,” he added. The doctor who is conducting these operation is Dr.Richard Ferman. He is a well qualified and very experience Pediatric Surgeon. He has saved as more than 1500 children's lives in Sri Lanka without charging a single cent (voluntarily). Sri Lankan doctors are protesting for the fear of losing money which they get from Private Practice, which is very sad. They are so greedy for money.

Don't give wrong facts. Pls provide your source. It is innocent peoples lives that they put at risk.

We all experience Sri Lanka doctors exploiting helpless patients when they are helpless. The average citizen needs to sell some property before undergoing an operation at a private hospital these days.

Be Fair Friday, 20 April 2018 01:43 PM

Lets assume the number of operations of 1500 is correct. Lets also assume a Cadio Surgeon charging Rs 150k for an operation. Thats a cool Rs 225.000.000 lost to some of the selfish GMOA Members. Now I know why "Trade Union Action" is needed.

    Kanthi Friday, 20 April 2018 02:15 PM

That is because the lady surgeon who is there is incompetent to perform operation.

GMOA is not a trade union but a political movement. It gained status as a political party only because the President met this group as and when they wanted to meet him. Its time the President stands strong and tell these thugs who put the lives of innocent civilians in danger to fly a kite.

The GMOA members are very responsible and patriotic citizens. So patriotic, despite losing valuable Private Practice, they protested and struck work, against FTA's and low standard Education at the SAITM private medical college and other national projects. GMOA Paediatricians would never be jealous DR Richard Ferman carrying out operations without fee, for the deserving poor children in southern Sri Lanka.

The true intentions of the GMOA stike actions couldnt have been made clearer by this threat. Clearly a bunch of insecure narrow minded people trying to serve their own interests...

We should honor him as Sri Lankans and we should let him know that Doctors in SL are hypocrites but ordinary people of the country is appreciating what he does to the country.

    mail4.miracle Saturday, 21 April 2018 05:50 AM

SLMC can decide to approve anything, even court verdict of SAITM. That's why GMOA infiltrating SLMC to pass their private med. school.

    Ralahamy Saturday, 21 April 2018 06:07 AM

Medical Council should be involved in this type of matters, and not the GMOA which is a self centered Trade union.

    I hate Sri Lankan doctors.

If the British General Medical council Appraisal and revalidation scheme is introduced in Sri Lanka 75% of practising doctors will have to be retrained. they have a free run after the M.B.,B.S and they think they know everything. I would like the health minister to look into introducing annual appraisal and five year revalidation programme in Sri Lanka. I can help on this as a Consultant working in London. In the process of development ,the standards has to be maintained. When I was in Sri Lanka in 1975/80, not many people went abroad for treatment. Our teachers were world class and there for there was no need to go abroad for treatment. Now the sad story is if you don't go away for major problems ,god help them.
