St. Joseph’s, President’s BMV claim titles

St. Joseph’s College Colombo and President’s BMV Nawala clinched the Boys’ and Girls’ overall title respectively at the 47th Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics Championship which concluded at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama on Friday (10).
 
The Joes collected a total of 62 points to finish ahead of the runners-up Rahula College Matara (48 points) and Maris Stella College Negombo (47 points).
 
In the Girls’ championship President’s BMV Nawala won the overall title with a tally of 62 points followed by Sumana Balika MV Ratnapura (47 points) and Ave Maria Convent Negombo (42 points).
 
Meanwhile, Mendis Abeysekera of Siddartha MMV and Sadini Kavisha of Vijitha MMV Dickwella won the Best Junior Athlete in the Boys’ and Girls’ category. 
 
Mendis won the Boys’ Under-15 long jump title with a record effort of 6.52 metres while Sadini set up a new mark in the Girls’ Under-15 long jump with a performance of 5.47m.
 
Altogether 21 records were established and two records were equaled at the meet.

DAY TWO: Meet records galore on day 2  

A total of nine records were established on the second day of the 47th Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics Championships which continued at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama on Thursday (9).
 
The best effort came from Ruwansa Weerakkody of President’s BMV Nawala who set up back-to-back records following her heroics on the opening day of the meet.
 
This time she set a new mark in the Under-13 Girls’ 200 metres while clocking a time of 26.7 seconds and shattered the previous record of 28.8s held by Methhani Wickremanayake of Sri Sangamitta BMV Matale in 2008.

FIRST DAY REPORT: Ruwansa shatters 23 year old record   

Dulmi Ruwansa Weerakkody of President’s BMV Nawala shattered a 23 year old record on the opening day of the 47th Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics Championship which commenced at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama on Wednesday (8). 

Ruwansa established a new meet record while competing in the Girls’ Under-13 long jump event where she cleared a distance of 4.88 metres. 

She also bettered the previous record of 4.83m held by Yasara Silva of Sujatha BMV Matara in 1994.   
Meanwhile, Heshani Maheshika of St. Sebastian’s BMV Kandana and S. D. Kahangama of Sumana Balika MV Ratnapura also set up new meet records in their respective events. 

Heshani put up a fine performance to win the Gold Medal in the Girls’ Under-15 discus throw event with an effort of 35.46m.

She also shattered the previous record of 31.57m held by Chanuka Atapattu of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo in 2014. 

Kahangama also stole the limelight with a tremendous performance in the semi-finals of the Girls’ Under-14, 80m hurdles.

She set up a new mark with a time of 12.9 seconds and shattered the previous record of 13.6s held by Krishanthi Jayathilaka of Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo in 1996.

A total of 10 finals were worked off on the opening day of the meet and a further 28 finals would be completed on Thursday (9).
