Sri Lanka, one of world’s most religious countries: Survey

Sri Lanka is one of the most religious countries in the world as 99 percent of Sri Lankans who were questioned in a survey had said they feel religious, the Telegraph reported today.

The Telegraph UK had utilized the results of three Gallup polls taken in 2008, 2009 and 2015. Each asked respondents whether or not they felt religious; for each country they've included the most recent figures available.

According to the surveys, five countries tie for the title of most religious. In each of Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Malawi, Niger and Yemen, 99 per cent of those questioned answered "yes".

Burundi, Djibouti, Mauritania and Somalia saw 98 per cent reply in saying yes to being religious.

The survey results showed faith is important to many southern European countries too, with 74 per cent of Italians and 71 per cent of Greek claiming to feel religious.

Poland stands out against the rest of Europe, with 86 per cent answering "yes" to the poll; Paraguay would appear to be South America's most religious country.

Around three in 10 Britons feel religious, it suggests, compared to 56 per cent of Americans.

The least religious country was China with only seven per cent, followed by Japan, Estonia, Sweden, Norway and the Czech Republic.

Most evident conclusion from the chart: Success is inversely proportional to being religious. The less religious you are, greater the development of your country. Sri Lanka aligns with Africa. All other developed nations are less religious.

How religious are we when we do not think that dumping our waste to be an health hazard to others is ok .How com our religions do not influence us on the cruel reality of selling hard drugs to our youth and the down side of amassing wealth by looting the common funds on perks when our own is left with hardly anything ?

Today the politicians in tow with ambitious politically oriented members of the clergy, whose place of worship look more of a castle than a place of simplicity and tranquil atmosphere, use religion as a showcase to cover their blackened images , and other corrupt sidekicks use it as a veil drawn over their dump of sins.

This survey is not correct and does not give a clear result of the subject. When someone ask you if you are religious they would definitely answer yes...but a religious person should practise his religion on a daily basis throughout his life. So he would not take bribe or give bribe, drink alcohol, gamble, kill someone, rob someone, cheat someone etc...

People do seem to be going to temples, churches and Kovils. But when they come home they are devils. Ill - treatment towards their old parents, children, wives and even being in-human towards animals. Look at the way our stray dogs are treated. Sometimes our animals have more sympathy towards other animals - But our people now are worse than dogs - sorry to say this and live in this country.

Look at the map all least developed countries are veryreligious. Russia was a very religious country which waspoor and worshiping its Royal family about 100 years ago.It dropped the religion and became an industrialised nation.

I don't think we lead with anything, if so that would be stupidity as well. we have to take this stupid subject called religion from school syllabus, what a waste of time..from year 1-11. we should introduce anything useful subjects. let the religion be in bansla, kovil and mosque.

No religion subject even in indian school syllabus. but we waste a valuable time from year 1-year 11. then we waste more time in schools and universities, when we graduate it is minimum 24 , while a student from indian graduates at 21..it is hard for a average guy from Sri Lanka to compete in carrier with any other foreigners.

With all this religiosity in Sri Lanka, where are we - economically or in minumum crime per capita. If 99% religious and practice a religion, then only 200,000 irreligious upto crime ? Take all the politicos at national and provincial levels and the underworld, how many are left. Good example Weerawansa and the Priests trying to corcumvent law recently with a fast. Give me New Zealand,, followed by Japan, Estonia, Sweden, Norway

Identifying with a religion has little meaning. If this was a good thing Sri Lanka would be more livable than many European countries. This only goes to show that people who claim to be more religious are easier to be manipulated and more often than not tend to live in a bubble of their own making based on their beliefs which more often are not aligned with actual doctrine.
