Isipathana beat Science to emerge Under 16 Cup champions

Isipathana College emerged Cup champions of the Under 16 Milo All Island Schools 15-a-Side rugby tournament with a comfortable 22 points to 05 win over Science College in the final played in the evening session at the Racecourse Ground in Reid Avenue on Friday.

Champions Isipathana led 17-05 at the breather, accumulated their points through a goal and three tries to the solitary try scored by Science College.

Earlier, D. S. Senanayake College recorded a runaway 24 points to 00 win over Lumbini MV to lift the Plate title. D. S. Senanayake made up their points through three goals and a penalty.

In the morning session of play Zahira College outclassed Lalith Athulathmudali MV Mount Lavinia 37-07 to take the Saucer title. Zahira’s score line came off through three goals, two tries and two penalties to the only goal scored by their opponents.

Maliyadeva bagged the Shield title with a convincing 34 points to 07 win against Piliyandala MMV.

Maliyadeva made up their score from two goals, four tries and a penalty to the solitary by Piliyandala MMV.

Wesley College was made to fight hard for their 14-10 win against Thurstan College to lift the Bowl title. Wesley made up their points from two goals to a goal and a penalty scored by Thurstan.


SEMI-FINALS REPORT: Isipathana, Science Qualify to Cup Final

Isipathana and Science Mt Lavinia qualified to the Cup final of the Milo All Island U16 15 a side rugby tournament by recording wins against two teams from the hill capital Dharmaraja and Kingswood in the semi final encounters played at the Royal Sports Complex ground in Reid Avenue yesterday.

The young Pathanas trounced the Rajans by 37 points to 7 whilst accumulating their points through three goals, three tries and a penalty tp the solitary goal scored by their opponents while Science overcame Kingswood by 22 points to 5 and made up their points from two goals a try and a penalty to a try scored by Kingswood.

In the Plate semi final D. S. Senanayake got the better of St John’s Nugegoda with a close 12-10 victory by scoring a goal and a try to the two tries scored by the Johnians. DSS will now meet Lumbini MV in the final.

In the only semi final encounter of Bowl segment saw Thurstan qualify to the final with a close 10-8 win against Vidyartha and they will confront Wesley in the final.

Zahira and Lalith Athulathmudali MMV booked the two Saucer final berths with wins against Eheliyagoda MMV and Asoka MV Colombo in the semi final encounters. Zahira thumped Eheliyagoda MMV 41-0 and Lalith Athulathmudali MMV overcame Asoka MV 15-10.

The two Shield segment semi finals saw Maliyadeva secure an easy 20-0 win over Nalanda and Piliyandala MMV overcoming Mahanama Colombo 19-7 to advance to the final.

The four finals are scheduled to be played on October 1 at the Royal Sports Complex ground from 9.00 a.m. onwards.

Saucer – Zahira beat Eheliyagoda MMV 41-0. Lalith Athulathmudali MMV beat Asoka MV Colombo 15-10. Shield – Maliyadeva beat Nalanda 20-0. Piliyandala MMV beat Mahanama Colombo 19-7. Bowl – Thurstan beat Vidyartha 10-8. Plate – DSS beat St John’s Nugegoda 12-10. Cup – Science beat Kingswood 22-5. Isipathana beat Dharmaraja 37-7.


QUARTER-FINALS REPORT: Science outclass D. S. Senanayake 50-00

Science College Mount Lavinia outclassed D. S. Senanayake College 50-nil in their Under-16 Milo All-Island 15-A-Side Rugby Tournament Cup Championship quarter-final encounter played at the Royal College Sports Complex Grounds in Reid Avenue on Tuesday (19).

After having taken a comfortable 24-0 lead at the breather, the winners accumulated their points through five goals and three tries.

Meanwhile, Kingswood College coasted to an easy 37-0 victory over St. John’s College Nugegoda after leading 25-0 at half time in another Cup Championship quarter-final fixture. 

The winners collected their points from one goal and six tries.

In another Cup Championship quarter-final encounter Dharmaraja College defeated Lumbini MV 21-0 after leading 7-0 at half time. 

The winners collected their points through three goals.

In the Bowl Championship quarter-final Thurstan College recorded a runaway 66-0 win over Revatha MMV Balapitiya. 

Thurstan led 38-0 at the breather and made up their points through eight goals and two tries.

In the Saucer Championship quarter-finals  Eheliyagoda recorded a convincing 57-0 win against Siri Piyarathana MMV Padukka while Asoka MV had the better of Gintota MMV 22-nil.
