The 2018 Trafficking in Persons Report released by the US Department of State revealed that women and girls from Sri Lanka and other countries were subjected to sex trafficking in Afghanistan and India.

The report was released by Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo at the State Department headquarters in Washington, DC last week.

“There are reports of women and girls from Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan and China subjected to sex trafficking in Afghanistan. Under the pretense of high-paying employment opportunities, some labor recruiting agencies lure foreign workers to Afghanistan including from Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, Iran, Pakistan and Tajikistan; the recruiters subject these migrants to forced labor after arrival,” the report said.

It said Burmese Rohingya, Sri Lankan Tamil and other refugee populations continue to be vulnerable to sex trafficking and forced labor in India.

Meanwhile, the report said some Sri Lankan women were subjected to forced prostitution in Cyprus, Maldives, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and elsewhere.

Quoting an NGO report in 2016, the report further said some domestic workers from Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have been reportedly forced into prostitution in Jordan after fleeing their employers. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Pramod Fernando Sunday, 08 July 2018 03:13 PM

Same as sending our poor women to Middle East as slaves, just for the sake of country's economy.

    Harini Sunday, 08 July 2018 03:48 PM

While the government is trying to ensure women are protected from local employment in bars and liquor shops, they are being sold in the name of foreign employment to the Middle East en masse as domestic labourers and are increasingly being exposed to trafficking and sexual exploitation rings. If women felt they had better quality work that respected their labour and were more lucrative to feed their children, put a roof over their families and help develop themselves, would they even bother going as slave labour to the ME and other countries? We have over 200 male MPs in parliament who don't give a tuppence for women, let alone poor women bringing in foreign reserves at a cost to their lives! Time to shake up and wake up parliament!

    Rsa Sunday, 08 July 2018 03:59 PM

Sri Lanka is going down the drain little by little. Disgraceful and shocking to know this news. The people in the country and the Government should put a stop to all these which are completely against the Sri Lankan culture, religion and bringing up.

    Ash Sunday, 08 July 2018 05:11 PM

Quite a few of these women have also gone willingly probably due to economic reasons

    Dee Sunday, 08 July 2018 07:30 PM

We have an acute shortage of labour here. But they simply want to go 'abroad' . One might say they go unwillingly and are forced in to such trades. Then again , can you force someone to go 'abroad'? . On a lighter note, we have so much of higher education paths in SL, but parents send children 'abroad' for degrees (actually diplomas) . Do they really know what goes on over there? But then again, as long as parents don't know and the kids are 'abroad'. All is well.

    Ceylon Sunday, 08 July 2018 08:53 PM

Most of them are willing partners.they know the risks and they know the news of others.so how to help with this situation.

    Nadeeha Sunday, 08 July 2018 09:31 PM

This is one of the achievements our country has made after the independence

    Joseph Sunday, 08 July 2018 10:17 PM

Only gullible people without proper education can be convinced that there are employment opportunities available in Afghanistan

    Rasheed Monday, 09 July 2018 11:18 AM

Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau is more concerned to collect money only, they don't check the passport for Visa or question the when they leave. They have a special counter at the BIA.
