Wow, very good news after a long time. We can afford more super-luxury cars for our "hon" members, increase the number of members to LGs and of-course make our cabinet to 200. We have development ministers for Kandy, South etc., etc. I wonder how many development ministers India would need for each of their cities, provinces. 20,000?

    OBSERVER Tuesday, 27 February 2018 02:55 PM

ACTUALLY WE NEED TO HAVE DEVELOPMENT MINISTERS FOR EVERY VILLAGE.WE ARE WONDER OF THE WORLD

    Saman Tuesday, 27 February 2018 01:19 PM

Like to see the change after 2009. Development needs loans but with what cost? Loans should utilise for the projects that ultimately leads to profits. Here 50% goes to the minister, 25% for the officers and 25% or less goes to the real project. So how can we expect development?

This is nothing compared to 2500 years old culture

I thought it was more than that......

    Tharaki Tuesday, 27 February 2018 01:34 PM

Since this govt has no solutions the debt burden would double soon

Vimal Carlos Tuesday, 27 February 2018 01:47 PM

40 bilion dollar debt is very low compare other countries in the world. However if you look at SL as a 3rd world country the debt is insane huge.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_external_debt

The way we solved issues in the past, I guess somebody would propose increasing the population to resolve this Per Capita Debt issue.

We won a war, constructed airport and harbours, and expressways, nelum kulunas and many more. I am not surprised that we have to pay. And our kids too will have to pay.

Very a committee will be appointed to find ways and means to recover money from each and every citizen of Sri Lanka to pay debts.

Except free education and health service all other freebies should be scaled back if we are to be a debt free country. All state wealth stolen by the previous regime must be recovered expeditiously and politicians of all hue must not be given anything for free, if they do not like it they can jolly well pursue another career As a country we all should learn to live within our means!

    Harry Tuesday, 27 February 2018 04:41 PM

Vithura read the news carefully and note the Jump from 2015 to 2016 - increase with doing nothing other than looting!

    sss Tuesday, 27 February 2018 03:41 PM

That means we are a upper income level country LoL. Let us import more cars and fuel for educated professionals who do not do anything for the economy. . we can always send more rural women to middle east to get dollars

    Ceylon Tuesday, 27 February 2018 03:42 PM

Country has debt mean that country dont have and did not have suitable leaders and suitable government to run economy properly.srilanka, usa, ate among economicaly bankrupt countries, among countries with no debt are singapore, japan, switzerland and most of west europe.

Salute our politicians. What a development they had given for us specially after 2009.

    Lokka Tuesday, 27 February 2018 04:41 PM

Don't blame the parliament or innocent politicians for this. Its the fate of srilankans. See Good clean ministers like Kirella etc and how come such debt. Its the fate of being born in mother Sri Lanka.

First of all, bring equality and treat all the classes and masses equally. here one class get all the facilities like duty-free vehicles and the general public suffer.if duty is applied to the importation of cars it should be applicable to all irrespective of the government worker, doctor, and engineer.this must be the first step if not make it reasonable for everyone to enjoy. here in the middle east, we are enjoying tax-free or just 5% cars but we can't afford to buy a car in home country due to high taxes but here taxes are applicable to all irrespective of local ,expatriates ,government-private etc

    TONY Wednesday, 28 February 2018 12:36 PM

THIS KIND OF DATA MAY BE IMPORTANT FOR THE COUNTRY AND TO SOME. BUT THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE ARE ONLY INTERESTED OF A WAY TO LIVE WITHIN THEIR MEANS. FOR THIS COS AND COST OF OTHER ITEMS SHOULD COME DOWN
