In the wake of the death of Matara robbery’s main suspect, Finance and Media minister Mangala samaraweera said in a twitter message that the rule of law must prevail even when dealing with criminals.

He tweeted that the brutal murder of a Police Constable on duty in Matara cannot be justified by an equally brutal murder of the suspect while in police custody.

Same old script since 1948. Accused taken to hideout to find the stolen then he tries to attack, police shoots the accused in self defense.

    Haramanis Sunday, 24 June 2018 09:44 AM

Does the law apply equally to Politicians???

    Cobra Sunday, 24 June 2018 06:56 PM

Asanka De Silva Sunday, 24 June 2018 09:55 AM

If Rule of law prevails for this criminals,1) They commit the crime and go to remand prison.2) They maintain they're criminal activities from the remand prison through mobile phones.3) They come out on bailAnd the cycle will continue.

Its easy for you to tweet when you have full security around you. Sir how about the ordinary law abiding citizens? Our streets are not safe again. Let the police officers bring the situation under control. Please dont discourage them. You cant preach good governance when your head is inside the mouth of underworld monster. First we need to come out of that situation.

    sigiriya Sunday, 24 June 2018 11:03 AM

The Minister is correct. I have read of so many cases where the person (criminal) under arrest, is taken to locate and identify his weapons or booty and then unexpectedly he takes out a gun or a grenade, so unfortunately the Police have to shoot him!!!! Somehow, this story no longer sounds credible!Remember, 2 murders have now been committed and one of these killings whilst in custody, by the custodians themselves, or so it appears!

    Jessy Sunday, 24 June 2018 12:32 PM

    100% agree.

Why are you trying to protect these underworld criminals, You sound like there godfather.

    DHA Sunday, 24 June 2018 01:15 PM

At the beginning of elections you'll guys let out half the thugs to get votes these guys were only dealing with drugs that time but ultimately now they have grown to be big time killers.....these pests should be taken out we don't need them in our society including you....

    TJ Sunday, 24 June 2018 01:22 PM

Since law enforcement and judicial convictions are tardy in Sri Lanka, the police might have opted to deliver instant justice. After all justice delayed is justice denied.

    Criminal Sunday, 24 June 2018 01:35 PM

If that so ; 90 percent of the parliamentarinas would have been in jail by now .

    Cobra Sunday, 24 June 2018 06:59 PM

Nay, out on bail by now!!!

    S.P.Ramkumar Sunday, 24 June 2018 01:47 PM

Sir, there is an unwritten law in this world if anyone killed police officer, Police killed him however immediately or latter. If anyone killed a judge he will be put in jail for long time, if anyone killed Forces ., he will be killed on the spot, if anyone killed politician in power, he will be released by opposition party once come in power.

    ravin Sunday, 24 June 2018 02:50 PM

Eliminate the criminals is the only solution which was proven during the past. It cant be wrong present and future.

    DHA Sunday, 24 June 2018 02:54 PM

if this murderer would've killed one of your loved one then your tweet would've been totally different.....

    Haramanis Sunday, 24 June 2018 03:23 PM

Minister Samaraweera - you just said it - It is certainly YAMAPALANAYA that we are unfortunately undergoing at present - economy in tatters, cost of living sky high, no law and order, daily murders, endless strikes - the list is endless! You are also a root cause of all this. Please get the hell out...

    Waco Sunday, 24 June 2018 03:54 PM

Hi Mangala, you controll the underworld Crime- Gangs then. You wait until some thing happen and then criticise. Find a fast solutions to the problem, if you think you are so smart.

    Jan Sunday, 24 June 2018 04:25 PM

Fully agree. These type of extrajudicial killings is only going to isolate the country.

    Dan Sunday, 24 June 2018 04:44 PM

    Not for bloody political crooks

    Mevan Sunday, 24 June 2018 06:03 PM

Whether it is yahapalana or yamapalana an eye for an should be the response to these underworld criminals. In the Matara incident police has failed to a certain degree. Police should have knocked off the whole gang without putting them in remand prison to be maintained by poor tax payers money.

Rufus Norton Sunday, 24 June 2018 06:17 PM

It is the same script as narrated under the previous regime. But this should not be so under the so-called 'Yahapalanaya'. Every human being has a right to be dealt with justly under the law whether he be a criminal or otherwise.

    malij Sunday, 24 June 2018 06:21 PM

I would rather go for justice even if it is raw over rule of law at any given time.

    Huna Sunday, 24 June 2018 06:30 PM

Bank robbers talking about rule of law's

Dimuthu Mendis Sunday, 24 June 2018 06:40 PM

Have to accept the minister's comment and act on it because we remember an era in late 80's where armed forces were allowed to take decisions like this and how country suffered. Who can assure they won't do the similar thing to an innocent person... we all know well about the Sri Lankan police....

    decentgent. Sunday, 24 June 2018 06:40 PM

It is absurd comparing the politicians to these criminals. Our law is very weak. Most of these criminals are confident that they can go Scot free when a politician interferes and have him released on bail. Hence if he is deliberately shot dead whilst in custody, that will be a lesson to other criminals who will know what is store for them if mess around with the Police or other forces. No one should have sympathy toward such criminals.

    TD Sunday, 24 June 2018 07:12 PM

Sri lanka police has shown to the world that its incapability of handling criminals.Minister who responsible of police department should take stern action against those who violated the international police code. If Sri Lanka is planning to stand shoulder to shoulder with other develop countries in the world for human rights and other global affairs. It should follow

    Kalu Monday, 25 June 2018 09:23 AM

The most developed country is notorious for shooting black people, isn't ?

    Yeti Sunday, 24 June 2018 07:28 PM

True but but deep down you condone, don't you? Don't worry sir, we all do!!!

    Gayan Sunday, 24 June 2018 07:37 PM

Cat is out of the bag. Underworld fellows protected by parliment fellows.

    Gune Sunday, 24 June 2018 07:39 PM

In that case why is it not applied for MR, Gota,Namal. -Thajudeen, Ekneligoda, Rathupaswala, Lasantha , Killings at Welikada and the list goes on. So many unsolved deaths. They can be politicians but they are criminals first and have to be tried. That is why we elected you guys. Yahapalanaya has done sweet nothing but pave the way for MR and Gota to come back into power.

    Lawry Sunday, 24 June 2018 07:51 PM

Amusing to read these comments approving the killing without trial criminals, as the police wished. This same verdict was not given when a leopard was kill. It had attacked 4 wildlife officers. Comments were that the civilians who killed the animal should be punished by law. Is our compassion misplaced?

    sunil Sunday, 24 June 2018 08:42 PM

This was a silly statement. Underworld gang takes innocent lives, there was no any action from these politicians. These politicians protects them for their owned benefits

    Massina Monday, 25 June 2018 07:36 AM

IT is a mystery that we did not see any of the JO politician at the funeral of the Policeman! What happened? Were they not invited with their Kasa Bera group? Or were they not welcome? How come Wimalaya's mouth is shut?

    Roshan Monday, 25 June 2018 08:23 AM

Police cannot wait till someone overtakes them,, these patahalayas are unwanted members for Srilanka.. police has done the correct thing.

    yahiya Monday, 25 June 2018 08:35 AM

Mangala will loose the next opportunity. Politician, Judiciary, state sector all are corrupted. Sarath Fonseka is the correct minister to eradicate the crimes. Mangala, Ranil

    c.goonetilleke Monday, 25 June 2018 09:19 AM

I am so angry and sad about what you have tweeted. What you have told may be true but can it be applied to mindless killers who can kill anyone without remorse. These are the products of Sri Lankan politicians who have created a band of animals who can not be touched by the law. Send them to prison so they can continue their work unhindered. I feel really sorry for this country.

    Chandu Monday, 25 June 2018 09:39 AM

If you have a backbone please quit Yamapalanaya as a straight man!If you are continuing you are shamming

    cheers Monday, 25 June 2018 09:41 AM

Mangala is a dud even robbing the central bank was a criminal offence so what has the law done to punish those in your party nothing keep watching and give excuses

    Casanova Monday, 25 June 2018 09:42 AM

Hope all the corrupts including officials and the politicos), indecent drivers, rogues, drug traffickers, extreme religious leaders and the rapists end up killed like this, so the rest can live decently and peacefully.

    Janaka Monday, 25 June 2018 10:32 AM

Dear Minister, you are correct but many are not law abiding from top to bottom.. so let it grow more or eradicate this underworld mess ????? .Where is the security for ordinary citizens now??

Sumeda gnanarathne Monday, 25 June 2018 10:55 AM
