The trade unions of the Railways Department had decided to call off their strike following a discussion with President Maithripala Sirisena, a top TU official said a while ago.

Locomotive Engineering Operators’ Union (LEOU) Secretary Indika Dodangoda said several trade unions had a meeting with the President this morning.

He said the President agreed to give a solution to their demand.

Mr Dodangoda said trains services would be operated from this afternoon.

Railway trade unions launched a sudden strike on Thursday (9) over several issues, including salary anomalies.

    OMG Sunday, 12 August 2018 12:43 PM

Unfortunately, our President will be known as the weakest President in the history of SL. No comparison whatsoever to Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew

    Labby Sunday, 12 August 2018 12:48 PM

So once again we see the President wanting to project himself as the real hero in all things. He should have discussed this at a Cabinet meeting and advised the subject Minister to do what was necessary.

Citizen Perera Sunday, 12 August 2018 01:29 PM

This president indirectly support the strikers...others follow suits soon.

    Bala Sunday, 12 August 2018 02:00 PM

So he will get the railway strikers votes but be assured the common people will never vote you again.

Lord Wolfstein Sunday, 12 August 2018 02:02 PM

The Queen and the Prime Ministers of Great Britain or the President and Chancellor of Germany would never receive trade union leaders for negotiations. Why is the President of Sri Lanka constantly interfering in issues he does not understand or what is not his business?

    Anthonypillai Sunday, 12 August 2018 02:18 PM

Now government should proceed with reform in the railway department along with salary increase. The sriking Unions got a clear message from the public that the public are with the government for reforms. That's they backed down and not because of Presidents promise.

    ram Sunday, 12 August 2018 02:19 PM

govt. should consodering training forces and to bring public transfort. medical services under emergencies despite calloff strikes.

    ravin Sunday, 12 August 2018 02:20 PM

Look back and see the brain drain we got. Will there be a end to it ever . No professionals will work for this country. It is obvious set of idiots are ruining the balance image this country has and they want to take this country to grave yard with them.

    Unchikun Sunday, 12 August 2018 02:23 PM

The next move from the common joker is to release the thug in yellow fancy free. These are get back to his former fold. The appointment of diplomats gave a hint of what is coming. The blame goes to the UNP as they have a leader who has no public support and ability to win an election.

    lion Sunday, 12 August 2018 02:26 PM

Now for heaven sake don't be complacent and start to rest. Start training people to drive engines we never know when these blood suckers will be back again.

    lion Sunday, 12 August 2018 02:36 PM

ask people for mandate to privatize the railway. We have seen the sentiments of the train commuters who express their feeling to privatize this. This is the best time for this.

Sri Wickrema Sunday, 12 August 2018 02:53 PM

People will experience a new wave of strike soon due to this spineless actions.

    Will Sunday, 12 August 2018 03:32 PM

Pesident is correct, this government not in a strong position to demand, first to work then talk,by passing his adamant minister,he met the workers and stoped the strike for sale of public.but he has to keep his word

    sambo Sunday, 12 August 2018 04:02 PM

They were on strike for 4 to five days. The government should have kicked them out lock stock barrel and looked for a permanent solution cause in another week they will continue with same inconveniencing the public once again. The government does not suffer but the poor public.

    Harini Sunday, 12 August 2018 04:42 PM

Wonder what the solution was? Duty free vehicle permits to all strikers? We'll get a bill for it soon enough. Don't blink, this government will rob you before you know it.

Greener pastures Sunday, 12 August 2018 04:44 PM

Next time please vote for the person who has at least passed the O/Level examinations. Medical/Transport/Teaching/ Finance should all come under essential service regulation. Unless there is strict regulations this country will never ever move forwad and people will look for greener pastures abroad.

    Ajith Sunday, 12 August 2018 05:12 PM

Government should now prepare for the next strike with well train alternative workforce. Don't sit and do nothing as usual.

    kumar Sunday, 12 August 2018 06:23 PM

They were ignored by PM, caged by Mangala and were desperate but MS as usual ruins everything by giving them a way out. MS pays politics by weakening good governance.

    WTF Sunday, 12 August 2018 06:28 PM

Solution: (1) Gazette Medical Services and Public Transport as Essential Services. (2) Stop their monthly salary. They will think twice about taking strike action. (3) Have a contingency plan in place. (4) Promote only non-union members. (5) Cancel their pensions.

    Paramanathan K Sunday, 12 August 2018 06:41 PM

Barbarians back to work to strike again.
