PM initiates dialogue to revive UNF under new symbol

12 May 2018 07:15 pm - 32     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is reported to have initiated a dialogue with parties aligned with his United National Party (UNP) to form a broad front under a new symbol and policy plan to face future elections.

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) and the All Ceylon Makkal Congress are currently aligned with the UNP and function in Parliament as the United National Front (UNF).

The Prime Minister chaired a meeting at Temple Trees on Thursday attended by TPA leader Mano Ganeshan, SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem, ACMC leader Rishad Bathiudeen, JHU leader Patali Champika Ranawaka and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne.

Sources said the UNF would carry a new symbol instead of the UNP's elephant symbol and also accommodate Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MPs who are willing to join the new political front. (Kelum Bandara)

A new bottle, but the same old and stale wine. It will not help the country at all but would give some useless politicians some more perks at state expense.

Suggest for this 'achcharu' government the 'PolSabol' symbol - these jokers are wasting public funds without doing anything to the country.

Do you need respect, if so consider of being a consultant to the Junior politicians who still respect as a veteran, professional in SL politics but not as a leader which SL population expects. SL as a developing country in south Asia the characteristics of SL known to be aggressive

A weak leader who will stoop down to any level to be the leader of UNP

    Ceylonese Sunday, 13 May 2018 05:37 PM

Ranil has already destroyed the UNP and wants to change the name and symbol of the party for his own survival.. He should have been kicked out of the party long time ago. His leadership has been a total disaster for the party as well as the country.

    Unchikun Sunday, 13 May 2018 05:39 PM

Sorry man, there is nothing wrong with the symbol. What could be better than the "Elephant" as a symbol. A majestic animal and a majestic party. The problem is who is behind the symbol. The easy solution is for you to go.

    Sambo Sunday, 13 May 2018 05:40 PM

An old book with a new cover. Or make it the New UNP sa done in most places of business.

    wiseman Sunday, 13 May 2018 06:32 PM

Why does he(RW) understand that its not the party symbol that needs to be change rather himself.

    td Sunday, 13 May 2018 06:32 PM

I don’t think our voters would never ever agree to change the color green and the elephant symbol of our party to satisfy those opportunists’ selfish minor political parties. If other parties would like to join with UNP we welcome them, but we should not change our party color and symbol at all. I strongly feel that if the United National Party decides to make changes the color and the symbol it might break our great grand old party. Because of greedy politicians, we can see what has happened to the Sri Lanka freedom party today.

(Please respect the United National Party History)The United National Party was founded by D S Senanayake at a meeting in Colombo on 6th September 1946 – two years before Sri Lanka gained its independence from the United Kingdom. At that first meeting of the party, D S Senanayake said:“We are not, as our opponents wishfully think we are, a temporary coalition formed for the purpose of winning seats at the first election. We are a permanent organisation designed to act on a constitutional policy in the House of Representatives whether as the government or in opposition.” Our party continues that tradition today, governing for all people based on the founding principles of a strong an independent nation. D S Senanayake would become the Father of the Nation as its first Prime Minister – now an independent and growing nation. The United National Party is the only political party that has been represented in Parliament without interruption, since independence.

Please see what happened to the core principles of the party under RW

    td Sunday, 13 May 2018 06:35 PM

Personally I believe we should not change the Color and the elephant symbol of the party at all to satisfy minor political parties. It would definitely create a long term consequences to the United National Party rather than short term benefit for Sri Lanka. Elephant and the powerful color green is in heart and the mind of all Sri Lankans specially UNPers.

    Upul Sunday, 13 May 2018 06:36 PM

All these politicians have their agenda's looked into and fulfilled before even thinking of the people who elected them. RW is now an expired item, which should be removed from the shelf.

    lankan Sunday, 13 May 2018 07:07 PM

No point of uniting all parties if you are still the leader. This is your new plan to stay in leadership for another decade.

    Gona Sunday, 13 May 2018 07:16 PM

Public not interested in elections only burning issues now. At the rate u r going you need to be buried alive with your jokers and also make room for MR take him with you.

    mnsmart Sunday, 13 May 2018 07:31 PM

VOC will be the ideal symbol

    Jerry Sunday, 13 May 2018 07:38 PM

Mr. Ranil Wickermasinghe with due respect to your many years in the political area, it it not time to suggest making amalgamition of parties for a single symbol.MS is totally corrupt and it time for you as a leader and your cabinet to take correctiive action from allowing tax payers money and the countrys resources by a goon like MS who has no clue in running a government to be misused. The appointment of a duscreduted and corrupt minuster like Wijadasa is a shame for the country and the world for such matters. None of you have confronted MS what his tricks are.Because RN you have taken no action on these important matters the MS continues to carry on with more abuses of the countryWhen are these corrupt deals and unnecessert trips with MS and the goons going to stop. These are the crucial matters you and your cabinet has to deal before matters get worse..

Citizen Perera Sunday, 13 May 2018 08:41 PM

It is better to have a new leader rather than new symbol.

mackie noohuthambi Sunday, 13 May 2018 09:15 PM

elephant symbol of unp hand symbol of slfp are much old symbols which people of sri lanka are addicted. change of symbol will not solve any problem. changing pillows will not give releif for headache. find the root cause of the disease and give the correct medicine.

    Dhammika Monday, 14 May 2018 08:35 AM

RW will change the HQ of the UNP from SIRI KOTHA to BORELLA CEMETRY because already the UNP is lead by RW to the GRAVE YARD .
