The Mahanayaka Theras of three Nikayas and other Sangha Sabhas, who convened in Kandy today, unanimously decided there was no need to bring in a new Constitution or an Amendment to the Constitution.

They also stated that the Government should take immediate steps to resolve the SAITM issue and to take necessary steps with regard to the particular Medical University considering the patients.

The Maha Sangha also proposed that bringing the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances Bill to Parliament should be delayed to enable the Parliamentarians to study the bill.

They also proposed that a special committee should be appointed to look into the grievances that Buddhists were facing, with regard to religion and culture, the prevailing racial and religious unrest, and to pay attention to protect the archaeologically important religious places in the country.

The special Sangha Council was attended by three Mahanayakas of the three Nikayas and 75 other Theras at the Sri Chandrananda Hall in Asgiriya.

Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera, Ven. Balangoda Sobhitha Thera, Ven Welamitiyawe Kusaladamma Thera, Asgiriya Maha Lekakadhikari Medagama Dhammananda Thera, Dr. Godagama Sri Sumangala, Asgiriya Deputy Lekakadhikari Dr. Narampanawe Ananda and Keppetigoda Siriwimala Thera also attended the council. These priests are all chums of MR and they air his voice. They all were silent when Gen. Sarath Fonseka was imprisoned.

It looks as if the Prelates fear for their influence and power and they want MR back. They lack enlightment via DM Android App

Maha Sanga has a role to play as guardians.Considering what is happening today, in no time Buddhism will disappear and voiceless. This Govt is hell bent on destroying the culture and will imprison the war heros and do many other things to please the West by bringing in various laws.Be alert and mindful!

Actually, there is no need for the mahanayakes and the theros or the religion to interfere with a state. Do away with these bindings so that the people can follow the religion and also do what best for the country.

With due respect, if mahanayake theras can decide on these matters in unison and issue fiats to the government that why can't they issue a decree in the same manner banning doctor's from striking?

With all due respect to the Mahanayakas, Lord Buddha ensured Buddhism remained secular. The Buddha was careful enough to provide advice to the rulers but never interfered with the legal process or demand law be imposed.

We need separation of state and religion. ...People will decide about a constitution in a referendum...Its not for your council to decide.

Earlier, they passed a resolution to release Sarath Fonseka. Then Govt. did not listen to this. Instead, it threatened to open a Nikaya in South.

IS THIS A TEMPLE OR A LITTLE PARLIAMENT ?

    Praba Wednesday, 05 July 2017 05:33 AM

They are respected much much more than the corrupt parliament by most Buddhists. Politicians should understand that reality.

    s.balasingam Wednesday, 05 July 2017 05:29 AM

The present govt got a mandate to resolve some of the outstanding national problems. As such, a new constitution could be the way for fulfilling those commitments. Parliament is responsible for passing necessary laws. The prelates could contribute positively in this regard rather "shopping" for dirty politicians. We must have faith in our leaders and allow them to do the right things.

    Ruwan Wednesday, 05 July 2017 02:25 AM

Yes, lets have a referendum to see if the public in Sri Lanka want to remove Buddhism from its status as the state religion.

    GCC Wednesday, 05 July 2017 01:48 AM

The religious should concentrate on religion and let politicians look after the country, without being influenced by personal interest. Should not a doctor do her job and engineer do his, instead of doing each other's work? The venerable theros should also get enlightened, like the Lord Buddha.

    Suranimala Tuesday, 04 July 2017 09:15 PM

Also please ask the government to take action against the hooligans who attacked the Pirith ceramony at Sri Jayawardenepura University.

    DJ Tuesday, 04 July 2017 09:09 PM

    well done venerable thero!

    raj Tuesday, 04 July 2017 09:09 PM

That is not for you'll to decide that's is for all people to decide via a referendum..separation of state and religion is a must
