Muslim community leaders had stressed the importance of amending the 1951 Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act when they met with US Ambassador Atul Keshap late last week, the US Embassy said in a statement.

There has been a dialogue within the community for the reforming of this law for over a long time.

“Ambassador Keshap also paid respects to local religious leaders, including Jesuit Fathers Miller and Laurio, Americans, who have each served the people of Batticaloa for over 60 years. In addition, he hosted the US Embassy’s First Iftar in Batticaloa and met with Muslim Community Leaders, who stressed the need to modernise the outdated 1951 Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act,” it said.

People using god to torture the women and children in their community.

Muslim law or Sharia law must apply for Muslims in Sri lanka.

Lord Wolfstein Friday, 23 June 2017 12:11 PM

In a secular democratic country such as Sri Lanka, there should be no special laws for religious communities. For all ethnic and religious communities, the same laws have to apply. Under no circumstances should there be laws which allow the rape of children and other human rights violations. Every Muslim who do not agree in this can follow the Quran, which recommends all Muslims to emigrate to a country where the Quran is law.

No people cant decide to do what they please. Be sensible.

There is no such thing as divine law since god didn't formulate it. All religions are man made. Hence they reflect the mindset of the men who create them. Things like child marriages, subjugation of women, barbaric punishments etc must be abolished.

Logical Thinker Friday, 23 June 2017 10:38 AM

Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act of 1951 containing mainly the divine law by far is proven todate to be effective. Why change and create problems to the Muslims. Two previous committees appointed in the past have not recommended any significant changes, Why again and for whose benefit may be there is a hidden agenda.

Fellows like you are dangerous, especially in a position of authority. Whatever is in a book written by a group of nomads will be taken as divine and uncritically adhered to. How stupid.

    gona Friday, 23 June 2017 10:00 AM

@Ajith. Do you favour child marriages then?

    Geriatrix Friday, 23 June 2017 10:00 AM

The Quran states that we need to follow the rule of the land...on top of quranic law

    NDeS Friday, 23 June 2017 09:59 AM

The very idea of a God is ridiculous. Believing that we can live the same lifestyles as a medieval arab warlord is not compatible with intelligent human society or decency.

Just because someone pays taxes doesn't mean they can marry kids.

Ibrahim Mohamed. Friday, 23 June 2017 05:54 AM

Believers Allah, Muslim Marriage- Law, cannot be amended, it is Divine Law. Hope this centance is more then enough.

    Rasheed Friday, 23 June 2017 09:52 AM

In Sri Lanka they do not follow the Muslim Marriage law 100%. So , they have to check whether the amendments are according to Muslim Law. Thats all.

JESUS CHRIST CHANGED AND TRIED TO CHANGE SOME OF THE VERY OLD RELIGIOUS RULES LIKE PELLETING STONES , THAT IS WHY HE WAS CRUCIFIED

    Yusuf Friday, 23 June 2017 09:41 AM

But brother, shouldn't it be protected from people who misuse it in the name our religion? Answer this simple question. Will you give your daughter in marriage when she is 13 or 14 years old. You decide..

    ravin Friday, 23 June 2017 07:31 AM

Ah ha now every one may see who is behind communal tension among different communities.

    Jamalji Friday, 23 June 2017 07:20 AM

Women are worst hit over this. Country need not have separate law for Muslims and final settlement is reached under Civil Laws.

    Ajith Friday, 23 June 2017 07:08 AM

Oh I never new Muslim women are discriminated due twisting of the shariah law. Law needs to be changed to cater changing environment . Today is internet age people are expose to lots of wrong doing . Man can find a woman in seconds time using his mobile phone. Law need to be adjusted such a way to curb these kind of this. Divine (Sharia) laws are good for people who are religions and God fearing not for using Muslim name and take sharia law for their advantage. Muslim scholars and lawmakers should take this very seriously as I see lots of Muslim (divorces) are on the road asking for help. Mosf of the cases are due Mother-in Law or in-laws.

    Aminda W Friday, 23 June 2017 06:32 AM

I thought this guy was the American Ambassador... ah so he is our Minister of Law now.. He can change Sri Lankan Laws...

    brainmaster Friday, 23 June 2017 06:27 AM

This MMDA has to be changed completely. No more marriages of minors. Husbands strictly only one wife. Marriages AND Divorces only before OUR law. All this will help the Muslims to get a better acceptance. via DM Android App

    Don Friday, 23 June 2017 06:15 AM

Shouldnt the Muslims decide theyre own laws The government can make laws to keep kids safe from grown men. And the burden they put on the system by over using resources but not paying their due taxes. via DM Android App
