The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) today launched an investigation into the incident at Gannoruwa in Kandy on Thursday where 250 female students of a primary school were used to carry Osari pota (Saree bridal veil) of a bride.

The 3,200 meter-long piece of bridal clothing was created by a beautician, who is hopeful of setting a Guinness World Record for her work as the world’s longest Saree.

The students of Alwathugoda Sarath Ekanayake Primary School were seen lined up along the Gannoruwa–Kandy Road displaying the Osari Pota to the Guinness officials.

NCPA Chairperson Marini De Livera said the act was not only a clear violation of child rights, but also degrading.

“These children should stay at school and not carry a saree out in the sun during school hours. We don’t even know how many students fainted. This is an ill-treatment of the students,” she told the Daily Mirror.

She said once the students were handed over to the school, their protection and responsibility was with the Principal as they are under his custody.

“The Principal can’t send students to wedding functions. I have instructed the NCPA Police team to obtain a report from the area Police Station so we can continue with an investigation immediately,” she said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

This is a worse form of CHILD ABUSEPlease give the maximum possible punishments for all those who used children for this kind of vulgar acts

    dp Friday, 22 September 2017 09:22 PM

now dont jump the gun and blame the principal..he is innocent , he knew nothing about this. it's his wife who organized all this. if he knew about this before he would never let it happen.

    jude Saturday, 23 September 2017 11:33 AM

The principal may have been in the washroom I suppose.

    Asanka Friday, 22 September 2017 02:59 PM

Whose brilliant idea was this? What is this country coming to? Don't we have more important things to do than craving for cheap achievements like these?. Whoever thought this was OK to do should be under medication. What a shame.

    BuffaloaCitizen Friday, 22 September 2017 04:30 PM

Even if some humbug wanted to do this, it is not his/her business to use underaged school children and that too during school time. This is preposterous.

    SENA Friday, 22 September 2017 02:59 PM

Will the principal say "I do not know"? An answer in the trend.

    AUSLANKA Friday, 22 September 2017 03:04 PM

Culprits should be severely punished to avoid similar incidents in Sri Lanka ever again. How stupid is this? There are millions of Guinness world records in their own book and sensible people never cares about those useless records.

    BuffaloaCitizen Friday, 22 September 2017 03:09 PM

The principle needs to be arrested immediately and see her connection and how much she was paid to undertake this activity.

    John Friday, 22 September 2017 04:30 PM

    Should be fired!

    Mandy Friday, 22 September 2017 05:39 PM

I saw this on TV - Principal was a HE not she - and he was boasting what a great thing it was. It had nothing to do with education.

    Sunil Friday, 22 September 2017 03:32 PM

This shows the vanity of these so called "beauticians".

    Anja Friday, 22 September 2017 03:55 PM

Principal should be interdiced forever. via DM Android App

    Yahiya Friday, 22 September 2017 03:56 PM

I welcome to NCPA. But children must participate in society activities. It lead to records. Children not limited to school boundaries.

    ANTON Friday, 22 September 2017 04:07 PM

THIS IS CALLED " INDIRECT SLAVERY"

    Chinthaka Friday, 22 September 2017 04:15 PM

The Principal spoke to camera, proud of himself as this was his biggest achievement. :)

    shanthapriya Friday, 22 September 2017 04:32 PM

will be a very good advice to colombo school pricipals too. from recent past they used to line up small children along the road amidst burning sun in support of their cycle parades ahead of big matches

    Sincere Friday, 22 September 2017 04:38 PM

Pls impose maximum punishment against the teachers/principal who used little students for this blunder. Check whether the authorities of the education offices too were involved.

    malij Friday, 22 September 2017 04:44 PM

The chief Minister must know that children of this country are not his private property to use on his whims and fancies. President must take steps to remove this buffoon who clearly is not suited for such a post and also the principle of the school who is clearly a bum sucker of highest order.

    Thieuban Friday, 22 September 2017 04:59 PM

    A wedding gift by NCPA

    Ruwan Friday, 22 September 2017 06:22 PM

Children go to schools to learn, not to hold 'osari pota' (better yet may be to 'redda ussanna') of a crazy woman. How can principal take children out of school for this sort of mockery. Principal should be interdicted immediately for this lunatic act. Ministry of Education should have rules that schools should seek parental consent to take children out of schools, even for educational events. Events like these are degrading to children. Mockery at best in Loken Utum RAmana Rata.

    malij Friday, 22 September 2017 06:37 PM

Are we a morally and politically bankrupt nation to have such people as our leaders??

    malij Friday, 22 September 2017 06:42 PM

A nation has to be proud of it's leaders. Sadly, in Sri Lanka we are ashamed of most of our leaders. How many currently active national leaders are there you can be proud of???

    Expatriate Friday, 22 September 2017 08:13 PM

This NCPA chairwoman is nuts!. School allowing children on a special occasion of fun to the streets to carry the long sari supervised by the school teachers is no harm at all to the children.Let Sri Lanka Not become a paranoid and neurotic country like Britain.

Dr Ravi Friday, 22 September 2017 08:22 PM

Why children are sent on adventure trips where they undergo tremendous hardships? To build confidence and character. So think this children had a good adventurous day in the city. That lady in charge of the NCPA should be replaced by a balanced and confident man.

    Hiran Friday, 22 September 2017 09:46 PM

You are absolutely right. You are telling the Truth others are following the popular path.

    malij Friday, 22 September 2017 10:02 PM

Can anyone call getting up at 3.30 in the morning and holding a "sari pota" an adventure, to build confidence and character? MR also said something similar regarding Sil Redi issue.

    SpaceCab Friday, 22 September 2017 08:40 PM

Really NCPA where are you when thousands of innocent children are ordained as priests???

    Arujuna Friday, 22 September 2017 09:44 PM

NCPA is selective in its investigations and its head is off the rail.

    Kanthi Friday, 22 September 2017 09:10 PM

Before anyone, the Chief minister Sarath Ekanayaka must be brought to book and be severely punished for promoting a wrong act and setting a very bad example. There is some other thing behind this we suppose. The so-called chief minister has become a joke in front of people. What a shame.

    Lingam Friday, 22 September 2017 09:48 PM

What bad example you are talking about,if you want to see children abuse visit Catholic Convents.

    Bindu Friday, 22 September 2017 09:38 PM

Weerathunga and Palpita are sentenced to 3 years RI for following illegal orders of MR. This principal has not learned a lesson from that. He must be sent to jail for 5 years for following orders of the chief minister.

    AIYO Saturday, 23 September 2017 10:10 AM

This was stupid and unnecessary but not a crime to give dire punishments to those concerened. It is better if they really look into worse crimes and abuse taking place in schools and society. Most people in this country are incapable of thinking before doing anythig and just go along with any gimmick!

    robert Saturday, 23 September 2017 12:34 PM

PLEASE GIVE MAXIMUM PUNISHMENT FOR THOSE NONSENSE PEOPLE WHO ABUSED THE CHILDREN

    Rocky Saturday, 23 September 2017 06:13 PM

Was the relevant couple legally married or was it a temporary marriage? The bride must be a shameless woman!

    gamaati Saturday, 23 September 2017 09:06 PM

We are living in a fool's paradise.

True Patriot Saturday, 23 September 2017 10:48 PM

Please leave the president out of this, he set this new "I don't know trend" He is an excellent roll model, a first in the Guinnes book of records. I don't understand this fuss about child slavery, imagine the impact this wedding must be having on these precious girls who are the future mothers of our precious Motherland. No other girl in our country had such an opportunity to participate in such a rare ceremony. We have to involve our children in activities which are going to influence their future possitively, instead of blindly being a slave to programs dictated to us by hypocrits.
