Mother, two daughters killed in accident

A 34-year-old woman, her 6-year-old and 12-year-old daughters were killed and another boy was injured when they were hit by a car in Pottuvil on the Pottuvil-Akkaraipattu Road last night.

Police said the car travelling towards Pottuvil had crashed into the victims while they were walking on the road yesterday evening.

They were admitted to the Pottuvil Hospital and the woman and her 6-year-old daughter succumbed to their injuries after admission while 12-year-old girl died while undergoing treatment at the Akkaraipattu hospital this morning.

The driver of the car has been arrested.

Police said the victims were identified as residents of Pottuvil.

    Just the arrest will not make any difference, the driver should be heavily punished and should be a lesson to other drivers who should take extra cautions when driving.

    All these road accidents that come about can be directly attributed to the source. That is the weak system we have in place in issuing driving licenses. If there was a better testing of driving ability rather than just merely testing reversing into a parking lot then it'll be much clearer where to draw the line for those who get licenses and those who don't, thereby reducing road accidents. Similar tests must be carried out for the renewal of existing licenses.

    OH!! What a tragedy and how to bare the loss.Why not the SL authority impose Strict rules against crazy drivers.Some drive like maniacs on road specially bus drivers and Police just look the other side and catch only sprats....
