LTTE resurgence should be thwarted: IGP

The terrorism had not been eliminated completely from the country and the attempts made by the LTTE organisation to stage a comeback should be defeated at any cost, IGP Pujith Jayasundera said in Jaffna on Tuesday.

The IGP expressed these views during a discussion held with the religious leaders and civil society organisations at the Auditorium of the Jaffna Police station on Tuesday afternoon.

“Though we say we have eliminated terrorism from the country, no one can make sure that seeds of terrorism had been removed completely. It is true that the weapons used by the terrorists were handed over in large number to the Government but it doesn’t mean all the weapons had been handed over,” he said.

He said the mindset of some of the former LTTE cadres had not been changed because of the rigorous training they have received.

“We have to put an end to this now. The Police and the STF has ensured the security but we need the public assistance as well. The Police, the State officials and the residents should maintain better relationships to overcome this menace,” he said.

“Some extremists and organisations are attempting to portray a wrong picture about the situation in the North for their petty gains, using some media institutions. This is how the LTTE made its entrance back in the days. We shouldn’t allow this to succeed,” he said. (By Romesh Madushanka)

If you really want to defeat the attempts of LTTE resurgence at any cost, you will have to defeat co-called 'yahapalana" government

Oh yeah! and re install the so called Hero who claimed to have wiped them out! If he wiped them out why the enormous security contingent? Doubt if the US president has this much security.

His comment is outspoken. Being top cop he should know. Apparently it seems that law and order in the civil sense is not active because the 'good for nothing' Law and Order Minister alias Lame Duck and the IGP don't see eye to eye.

Do not politicize your wording. If you have capacity, try to clean your department. As your corrupted personals involved most of incidents.

As he couldn't understand what is LTTE terrorism means, he should resign the job.

    p nonis Thursday, 03 August 2017 08:13 AM

The situation seems to be getting a bit out of control.THE LTTE was a well trained Terrorist Army. Although defeated there are a lot who are free to react ruthlessly due to the leniency of the Govt under pressure.UNHCR should consider these developments before going into unnecessary investigations and accusations of the past.Ordinary police force cannot combat LTTE terrorist. It shou\ld be the STF since LTTE will be using Gurrila tactics. sooner you get the LTTE suspects kept under survelence and track the situation could be brought back to normal. Last time also the police couldn't handle it and the Army had to come ,when a soldier was slain along with Alfred durraippa. JR Declared a war with the LTTE.and the war went on for 30 years.sucking all the earnings of the country,.

    Mohan Thursday, 03 August 2017 08:03 PM

It was not the declaration of war that led to 30 year war. It was the 1983 riots. Otherwise, LTTE, which was a group of less than a hundred, could have been easily controlled.

Do not invent new concoction in order to cover up your departmental inability . Although it was unfortunate , a bodyguard of the Judge's pistol in his holster was grabbed by a man who is said to have been drunk .So how the guard was fit enough , to be explained to the public by the IGP. Rather than just telling new stories about which we have been well aware since 1973.

    Lankan Thursday, 03 August 2017 11:07 AM

I don't think so. LTTE is defeated but IGP is using LTTE card to justify their existence! only criminals are roaming around the north with the blessing from some elements in the police and armed forces.

Lanka Shantha Thursday, 03 August 2017 04:25 PM

Chief, didn't you hear or what Minister Rajitha said about the thugs in Jaffna and who made them and who supported them? And these thugs are not LTTE but sponsored thugs.
