The Cabinet yesterday withheld the contract to build an LNG power plant in Kerawalapitiya to a bidder following heavy criticism.
The Power and Energy Ministry had finalized the proposal to award this contract to a foreign company, bypassing a lower tariff bidder in Sri Lanka.
This proposal which was criticised on the basis that it would cause a loss of Rs.50 billion to the State was taken up for discussion yesterday.
Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka proposed that it be scrutinized by the National Procurement Commission.(Kelum Bandara)

Nothing get the approval and everything withheld! This government is digging it's own graveyard. But, it will be people that will suffer most in few years with power cuts that may be unavoidable due to the inability of this govt to take decisions.

When there is so much coast line to generate wind power that will NOT harm NOR pollute the enviorement why go for LNG

Please note that power generation need to be available on-demand. Wind power is not available on-demand. When wind power is available there is no possibility of storing to use when needed. However whether LNG or Coal as the source of power is another debate which at present is going on.

Why can't these people do a job properly from the start? They always review after some protests by some people. Else go ahead with a wrong decision causing huge losses to the country and no one is responsible, people have to pay for the losses. This has been happening for a long time. Have a bunch of fools and crooks in the parliament.

Please take an example from Russia on how they offer new power plants tenders. All new power plants are open to public bidding who have the the technical and financial strength to build and operate..The highest bidder and the best tariff rate get the contracts. This way it eliminates the so called third parties who makes proposals gets contracts and then are looking for parties to sell the projects for high fees.Projects should be given to genuine parties who are able to do the projects and not to scouters who are looking to make a quick buck and go.

Is there no one in this country who can take a single clean decision?

Why not tell us the real reason, was it the kickbacks from the higher bidder weren't getting distributed?

IF BOTH PARTIES ARE COMPETENT ENOUGH THEN FOREIGN PARTY WILL AT LEAST BRING IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE.
