Three jumbos were killed after a herd was hit by the Batticaloa bound train early this morning while the elephants were walking across the tracks. One female elephant was pregnant at the time of the accident and the fetus had come out following the impact. (Pix by K.G. Karunarathne)

It is about time that the relevant authorities (Wildlife and Railways) gave up running behind 'technological solutions' that do not work. We need to develop a masterplan by getting data on where elephants cross tracks by tracking them with GPS collars and have the trains go slow at those places.

A few months ago I read about setting new high tech devices in railway engines and beside railway tracks to avoid this elephant hitting. It is high time to use a reliable and practical technical solution to avoid this elephant hitting.
