The joint opposition said today it was prepared to push for electoral reforms which would favour smaller political parties such as the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).

It said it was of the view that the proposal to annul the votes of a political party polling less than five percent of the total votes was a blow to many of the smaller political parties.

“Several of the smaller parties like the JVP will be affected by the proposed cut-off point. Therefore, we will join them to reduce it to two or three per cent,” JO National Organiser Dullas Alahapperuma told a news conference. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

It is high time them to think so, because very soon they too will be joining the group, "smaller party"

Having less than 5% of peoples votes means that only your family members and close friends have voted. Candidates with such low counts cannot be maintained by the public with a host of expenses including duty free vehicle permit, petrol allowances, office etc. etc. It is cheaper to provide a free 3-wheeler to members of such parties as an alternative job without being a burden to public money.

Yes, it's good to think about smaller parties. Where would JO be without smaller parties headed by WW, UG, DJ etc and very soon their own Pohottuwa! Must look after self at any cost. Running scared already.

current govt shouldnt bow down to the whims n fancy of the JO...actually the opposition is the TNA....why is media giving these rascals any airtime and not to TNA stuck to the 5 % why JO is now concerned about JVP no steam via DM Android App

Small parties remain small for decades because masses do not accept them or and their policies. In such a situation no point in speaking of survival. Advisable to desolve such parties and work as NGOs outside Parliement. via DM Android App
