City Planning and Water Supply Minister Rauff Hakeem is reported to have today submitted a Cabinet paper seeking to increase water tariffs.
However, the Cabinet is known to have deferred its approval. According to the memo, water tariffs were to be increased by 100 per cent in some instances and by 65 per cent in others while exempting Samurdhi beneficiaries.
Minister Sarath Amunugama had objected increase in tariff on water.
Meanwhile Minister Hakeem had said he could not run the debt-ridden National Water Supply Board without increasing the tariff.
“If I am not allowed to proceed with my proposal, someone else can take over its operations,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)

All organisations have wasteful expenditure. However a request for an increase of 100% and 65% cannot be agreed or approved.

Dear Rauf why don't you propose for all MP''s to give up their luxury lifestyle at the expense of the tax payers. That way you can easily balance the water bill for the country for 2 years. Shame on all of you bunch of theIves governing our country

Were you and your chairman deaf / blind when water board employees were granted a 25% fantastic salary increase despite objections raised by the board of directors? Why did you provide unproductive jobs to your henchmen by making it is over-staffed? Better to be a MP in the parliament as long as your henchmen want your presence in politics without getting involved in the management of governing enterprises.

Mark my word! The tariffs will be increased within a month as proposed by the Minister, adding more to the already heavily burdened people. Increases of 65% to 100%, that's incredible.

Hakeem ; you can do this nonsense in the next govt cabinet because you are a jumping fish and you know to swim in any water. Stop providing jobs at high salaries to your henchmen.
