The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) in a letter sent to President Maithripala Sirisena had requested to revoke his decision to enforce the capital punishment on drug traffickers and implement a powerful and long-term policy framework for the suppression of grave crimes, including drug trafficking.

HRCSL Chairperson Dr Deepika Udagama expressing the Commission’s opinion stated that the death penalty was a cruel and inhumane punishment, and seriously violated several human rights, including the right to life and freedom and was an extreme and irreversible punishment but ineffective as a deterrent.

She said that the commission admitted that major social issues caused by drug trafficking, including youths’ addiction to drugs, was exerting undue pressure on future generations and therefore, drug smugglers were engaged in a seriously anti-social process.

"However, it is the Commission's view that it could be curbed only by apprehending drug traffickers efficiently and enforcing serious punishments appropriate to their crimes, not by implementing punishments such as death penalty," she said. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Being a human rights watchdog, understand that its your responsibility / duty to object to this decision. However the country needs it even for a short period. Therefore, now that you have done your job, please keep quiet and allow the president to go ahead with the decision.

    Whose rights are HRCSL defending?

So isn't this a start, you morons. Have you guys made a noise about the school kids that are now becoming victims of drug dealers? And what about those little girls who are raped and abused then murdered?

This is a fair action been pending for a considerable time and through observation. No body commented, the menance of drug mafia, barons and dealers for deaths and destruction the review period. Thousands of human lives, families and the society paid a huge price as the law enforcers were silent. Now the President has taken bold decision suppose as final. Most of Asian countries apply death penalty to eradicate drug menace. You need no explanation for deaths of death merchants, thats final. Trust HE will not withdraw his sword

IF the president has ANY guts.....HE needs to tell these 'do gooders' in no uncertain terms..."MIND YOUR OWN D....D business" MM

Government should not delay what needs to be done. Can't satisfy everyone (some of them are in the criminals payroll). I like to ask HRCSL do you think drug traffickers has any sympathy on thousands of those young lives addicted to narcotics?

    Raj Sunday, 15 July 2018 06:34 PM

Madam ..what is the punishment you thinking of ? Give them luxurious life inside the prison ?

There are thousands of youth who have become zombies due to drug addiction and have become a menace to society by indulging in robberies, murders, etc. Drug dealers become millionaires supplying drugs to even school children. They don't deserve any sympathy. If they are to be imprisoned for life, they would have to be fed and maintained by tax-payers' money. They must be removed from society like rabid dogs. There is no alternative. HRCSL is shedding crocodile tears over the drug dealers, but don't give a damn about their victims.

    Zub Sunday, 15 July 2018 07:14 PM

What is the alternative? and has the life imprisonment worked so far? Implementing the death sentence will reduce the menace.and deter others from engaging in this dirty business.

Dear all / Ms Udagma,It ha come to a point that nno one can do anything in this country now. As simple as moving a chair from one place to another is protested. Please for heaven sake keep quite avoid insane dances, uttering invaid words and o forth and allow one who is elected to office to continue. At the end of the term if he as not performed people will remove him at the net election. This country it is possible unlike in some other areas of the world. Please let him do what ever he thinks is necessary to carry on. Otherwise, this country will go out of hand and no one will be able to manage this country

In my opinion, not only for drug trafficking but more importantly for murder, rape, and for child abuse, the capital punishment should be extended. May I ask the HRCSL why they are not bothered to look into the violations of Human Rights of the victims of murder, rape and child abuse along with drug trafficking, in the same way they are trying to exercise that right of the people sentenced to the death penalty

    Dias Monday, 16 July 2018 08:08 AM

HRCSL is singing for their supper!!If they don't make a huge fuss about this, their NGO funding might be in jeopardy.....sin men....let them shout a bit, if just to please their white masters!
