Government Information Department Director General Ranga Kalansooriya said that the journalist, who was allegedly assaulted during an incident in Hambantota, had violated basic ethical practices when covering sensitive conflict situations.

Issuing a statement said, he said that the government has initiated an inquiry into the alleged assault on a journalist during the protest at Hambantota Port on Saturday.

"It is expected that the journalists adhere to the highest standards of ethical practices when covering these types of conflict situations," Mr Kalansooriya said.

The statement also said the navy had pointed out that the physical presence of its commander at the scene was mandatory requirement of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

Journos must be thankful as they were not treated as Lasantha W, Tennakoon and Pradeep Ekneligoda.

This journalist must learn ethics, he has to take only news but he is emotionally talk with Navy. Also he must be learnt lesson from this incident. He depend protesters' pirates activity. particular media company is take full responsibility.

Common sense Monday, 12 December 2016 11:43 AM

I observed the entire video footage telecast by Derana. Any one could notice that the Navy Commander had been trying to chase away the crowd including this so-called journalist from the port pier. Then, this so-called journalist should have gone back without claiming that he is a journalist. Instead of that he tried to move forward with other trouble makers. That is the truth. Though he claimed that he had been assaulted and admitted to hospital, no injuries to be seen. It is evident that when he made a public announcement at the police station.

Journalists should stop giving prominence to thugs like the so called employees of the Magampura port and to bogus robe clad Monks of the Ravana Balaya. How can one allow 483 political stooges to hold a country to ransom. Hats off to the Navy Commander. Most journalists work for political agendas, play to mass galeries and they have no right to expect any sympathy.

Reading the garbage you write, you don't seem to be smart at all. Thank God for our brave journalists. They risk their lives to keep corruption on some check

All media is biased one way or another - journos try to get into the limelight and hence should not provoke situations. How many have reported the weerawansa house murder in detail while some silly matter is enlarged.

The navy was in a hostage rescue operation. Journo shouldn't interfere

Excellent performance by the Navy Commander. He has set the best example for all chiefs of defense institutions, he took the appropriate decision on his own to suit the situation fearlessly. We need such people at all Govt institutions if Yahapalanaya to become meaningful. He showed the whole world No nonsense with Sri Lankan Navy.

    Mike Monday, 12 December 2016 07:08 AM

Atrocious English and 4th grade grammar – Kalansuriya needs to get a competent translator. Someone needs to tell him the use of Dr. as a title is pompous and pretentious when it if for a journalistic PhD.

Any basic ethics the Navy commander has violated??

    lion Monday, 12 December 2016 06:17 AM

It appears in every issue where a journalist is allowed its is considered as journalists is always correct. At time they behave like thugs. Proper inquiry will revel what has really happened.

    Premalal Monday, 12 December 2016 06:13 AM

Can you please tell us what these "highest standards of ethical practices" you talk about? Who make the rules on site and decide that assaulting citizens is lawful.? By the way are there "highest standards of ethical practices" applicable to your political masters? And do the law enforces assault them if they step out of line?

    Chris Monday, 12 December 2016 06:00 AM

Journalists need training on ethics and boundaries. In SL you interview people who can write in the language and they are called journalists. Leading to unpleasant situations

This incident is another example for intervening political hands in public issues. Present governors claimed against the past regime that there was no media freedom. After they have come to power it is clearly shown the situation has become from bad to worse. It is evident that leaders are attacking the media from parliament to the ground level. People those who watch at what's happening in parliament are not jokers like them and also people have not forgotten what happened in Batalanda sometimes ago.I believe that this situation has to be brought to the attention of international media forum without further delay.

    abishek Monday, 12 December 2016 05:16 AM

What Government has said is true. For My understanding so far from Jan 8th 2015, Media has not taken any challenges to use the media freedom to develop, guide and make awareness of so many things such as development, health, education, economy but they simply doing un necessary reporting to get the ratings among the population. One more thing, I am sure in SL Media person does not have any international Qualified certificates, to hold good ethics as a professional media person. People get certificates from useless places and try to join for a cheap wages to get popular reporting and rating among the society. This is not Media. Learn from the west and east fist before you start your profession.Prof. A G. Gunawardena, University of Peradeniya

    Chandler Monday, 12 December 2016 02:28 AM

What are you talking about ! Non sense !! Jurnos were covering even wars including WW2 among chaos. So you do not want to cover the ugly side of politics. This Big man has zero brain !

    Cheers Monday, 12 December 2016 02:15 AM
