The government should intervene in addressing the estate workers' demand for a daily wage of Rs.1000, if not he will have to reconsider his decision to be in the government, Hill Country New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development Minister Palani Digambaram said.

Recently, estate workers carried out several protest campaigns demanding that their basic daily wage of Rs.500 be increased to Rs.1000.

The minister told a news conference that the Government had the capacity to intervene and resolve this issue.

“I heard the owners of estates saying that they could not increase the daily wage because their factories were making losses. It is not true. They earn enough profits but they pretend that their factories are running at a loss,” the minister said.

“I urge the estate owners to hand over their businesses to the Government, if they can’t run them properly."

He said he had informed Plantation Minister Navin Dissanayake about what was happening and that this matter would be discussed on Monday. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Not sure if this person has any knowledge of running a tea estate or have seen one.Due to rupee being deprecated the price received for a kilo also depreciated tremendously.Due to weather pattern the harvest have decreased.Labor shortage and no weed chemical available. If the estates are compelled to pay Rs.1000.00, either they will have to work less days, cut the labor force or even close the doors which will impact the estate worker not having an income at all.

Crazy to have 100% salary increase. I agree that Rs 500 low. Have you checked the numbers, before making this demand? With auction prices averaging $4.25 at Colombo auction and $2.41 at world tea auctions, may be the numbers can add up.

You had to do everything possible to obtain Rs 1000/- Because even your future depends on this,as estate workers had open their eyes , you can longer CHEAT THEM/

The demands of the hard-working estate workers are justified, but it is not the government's job to interfere in wage bargaining. I think Minister Palani Digambaram is not old enough to remember when the government expropriated the British estate owners and took over the estates themselves. All Estates went bankrupt.
