  • The aggrieved family said that they had lived at this place for the past 17 years
  • When they were informed earlier about this matter the family had pleaded with the authorities

The residents of a house, where they had lived for seventeen years, had been ejected on August 29 (Wednesday) due to a court order. The chief occupant of this residence is Warnakulasuriya Neville Fernando and lives in Manaveriya Arachchikatuwa. He is the father of two children.

The aggrieved family said that they had lived at this place for the past 17 years. They were not rich and at the time they arrived here they did not have proper employment. They had initially begun planting coconut seedlings and build a small house. Neville Fernando said that he had worked as a railway line labourer and the income he derived was not sufficient for him to build a house. On the day they were evicted from the house all their belongings had been thrown out. The court order has been issued stating that this is an unauthorised construction. When they were informed earlier about this matter the family had pleaded with the authorities not to evict them from the house and throw them onto the road.

An officer representing the courts, who arrived at this home, had informed that they were unauthorized to stay at this property.  Instructions had been given earlier for the unauthorised settlers to vacate the premises because the land had been confiscated under the Land Acquisition act and therefore legal measures had been taken.

When this matter was posed to the OIC of the Arachchikattuwa Police Anuradha Herath, he said that it was his duty to provide security for the court officials to carry out the orders

This is sad. It is difficult to look at the picture. Out of all the wrong things happening court found this. I m not saying to allow the wrong things. But look at it from a humanitarian perspective. This is government land so let him live or give him an alternate option.

Government should help the youths to get some skills to settle down their life. Otherwise, this situation will prevail.

In the picture, some other houses appear in the background. Are they authorised constructions? There seems to be some discrimination here. I am not condoning illegal occupation of government land, but can't some relevant government agency give this poor family a place to live?

its very difficulty to look at the picture

How can a Government be so brutal to throw the entire Family out of the house without giving them an alternative option. Shame on the Government. if this was a relative of a Political person or Family, they would have been given a TAJ MAHAL as an alternative yeah?

Out of all the crimes happening throughout the country/throughout the world, is this the thing went on to eyes of this bully officials? Humanity is lost at it's worse - specially for these poor.

What a funny court and law is this !!! All the big thugs who ruined the country by looting the public funds are allowed to enjoy further and this poor family is been put out of their small tiny house... hats off to our judges ... keep it up !!!

Well though its sad proper procedure should have been untaken to construct a house, no one has rights to build houses in others properties. plus proper warning was given for the said individual to take necessary action, rather than hoping his wrong will be made right

It is wrong to build houes on other poeple's land I agree but it is the responsibility of the governement to look after ALL the people. What the governemt should do is find an alternaive land nearby and provide him a house an land.

Mr.President, this is an ideal situation to prove your Yahapaalanaya by asking the court to reverse the decision or by giving this poor man and his family a decent place to live. Shame, shame, shame!!!!

Fazeeha Nizam Monday, 10 September 2018 03:34 PM

It is wrong to criticise the officers who carry out the orders of the court. The real wrong is in building in another's land and not in the action of the officers who do their duty. This family should have been given an alternative dwelling place before being ejected.

I think it is easy to comment on this when one is not involved in this incident, court officials are doing their duty, police is doing theirs, why complain when someone is at least doing their duty,
