Failure to submit documents of death row inmates: Prez to launch probe

President Maithripala Sirisena today said an investigation will be launched to look into the failures of several institutions to submit relevant documents relating to those will be facing death penalty should be implemented.

He said this failure has delayed the decision to implement the death penalty. The President made these remarks during a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat today to discuss about instituting necessary changes to the laws to control drug trafficking and minimizing criminal activities.

He said necessary steps should be instantly taken to implement the decision to enforce death penalty against the convicts who are still engaged in drug trafficking in spite of being sentenced to death.

“No one should weaken the laws to suppress drug trafficking. It is important to enforce laws without having any loopholes that allow the smugglers to escape,” he said.

Attorney General Jayantha Jayasooriya, Secretary to the President Udaya R. Senevirathne, Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Hemasiri Fernando, Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, Commissioner General of Excise Department and secretaries of ministries were present in this event.

I am not a MS fan, but if someone engages in drug related offences while in death row , he should be prosecuted and if found guilty the death sentence should be carried out. A law should be ratified in parliament for this.

Pointless enforcing the death penalty to curb drug trafficking. As long as drugs are brought into the country with the support of politicians the dealers will sell them in all parts of the island and to anyone including children. Therefore please focus all resources on stopping the import of drugs into the country.

This is the second second time President mentioned that he did not receive information / files pertaining to Archeological sites from the Commissioner and now regard to inmates facing death penaltyThis is shows his weakness to impose authority to the administration and there is no point of publicising but ensure that things are done

I am no MS fan. But I propose that anyone who is convicted to death should serve at least 20 years. No one should be able to change this. Also any deathrow inmate plans another murder or plans any narcotic operations and found guily should be sentenced to death the second time with only option for pardon should be life imprisonment till death. If found guilty of a third such offence should be hanged. This should apply to suspects of murder or drug offences who's cases are in progress and caught in further operations or murder as well. Murder to kill a witness should be in any case should result in hanging.
