The Jathika Vidwath Sangha Sabh said the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution on abolishing the executive presidency was a move to divide the country and urged the President and the Prime Minister not to go ahead with this amendment.

They said this at the National Conference of the Maha Sangha held yesterday at the Sri Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi Mandiraya in Colombo.

Prof. Induragare Dhammarathana Thera, the Ven. Medagama Dhammananda Thera, the Ven. Medagoda Abayathissa Thera, the Ven. Kongasdeniye Ananda Thera, Dr. Akuratiye Nanda Thera and several others who attended the conference are opposed to the abolishing of the executive presidency.

The Ven. Induragare Dhammarathana Thera said some separatists in Sri Lanka were hoping to divide the country and would make use 20-A to fulfil their aspirations. The Ven. Medagama Dhammananda Thera claimed that this was one of the 10 pledges given by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).

The monks said it was too dangerous to abolish the executive presidency when the 13th amendment to the constitution remained. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Oh venerable monks why not thought look after matters of the Dhamma as your priority or join us as laymen to fight political battles

    Janathawa Friday, 04 May 2018 05:15 PM

They are likely planning to contest the Presidency.

    leo Friday, 04 May 2018 05:29 PM

There are monks who look after the dhamma and there are monks who speak for the sovereignity of the country..this has always been the case throughout history. If monks kept silent in the past there wouldnt be a country for you to speak about even...

    karunarathna Friday, 04 May 2018 05:41 PM

Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka not only involved in Dharma. They are the backbone of the country and guided the rulers. That is how country existed for 2500 years

    dulan Friday, 04 May 2018 05:41 PM

If they want to worry about sovereignty of a country why become monks?Did not Buddha just give up his Kingdom?

    Haramanis Friday, 04 May 2018 06:13 PM

Oh Leo and Karu, your explanations seem to explain the position our beloved motherland is now in

    leo Friday, 04 May 2018 09:17 PM

dulan the buddha left his kingdom to re-discover the dhamma path. Now that we have it it must be protected and can only be done in a country where dhamma is respected. It only those who have no clue about the importance of the dhamma who say that monks have no voice..

They have a different agenda, not for betterment of the country but for the betterment of a family and in turn for their betterment.

De Silva Friday, 04 May 2018 05:22 PM

These monks are interested in political matters not about Buddha sasana

    sumanadasa Friday, 04 May 2018 05:43 PM

Pl go thru history what monks did for continuity of the country

    Priest Friday, 04 May 2018 05:42 PM

Oh monks, please keep out of politics. You all are the real cause for the ethnic problems. Take the biggest Buddhist country CHINA. Do the monks their get involved in politics? Not a bit. That country runs very well. No other country in this world the monks get involved in politics. Our monks have too much of free time for politics and no time for dharma. A law should be passed who ever get into yellow robes should not get involved or talk about politics.

    janaya Friday, 04 May 2018 06:08 PM

The whole problem is that now adays the monks has become the defence shield for the politicians, union activities, strikes, be frontline at protests, etc.... and giving prominence for everything

    sumathipala Saturday, 05 May 2018 11:43 AM

This is Sri Lanka. Mahasangha came forward when there was a disastrous situation

    malij Friday, 04 May 2018 06:00 PM

it is not the voice of maha sanga. It is the voice of some priests who are more interested in earthly comforts you get when you engage in politics, rather than working for uplifting the much needed spiritual side of our nation. Why do they want to engage in dirty political matters whilst they are in robes? They could do that as laymen.

    Sincere Friday, 04 May 2018 06:43 PM

What about the verdict of 6.2 million who voted for Yahapaalana Government to abolish Executive Presidency and the pledge the President gave in 2015?

    Ranjan Friday, 04 May 2018 06:44 PM

You idiot China is not a Buddhist country.... use Google you fool, look for information before u utter nonsense.

    Unchikun Friday, 04 May 2018 06:56 PM

I am born to Buddhist parents. I follow the Buddhist philosophy. I am proud I do it better than the major of the guys in yellow fancy dress. The decline of these guys in yellow fancy dress has deteriorated to a very low level. Their agenda is not the Buddhist philosophy. It is to bring a dictator to power. We will not allow that to happen.

    AYOTALLAH Friday, 04 May 2018 06:59 PM

A crucial stage to arrive at a decision. The Tamil Diaspora and TNA are hell bent to divide the Country by supporting the dissolution of Executive Presidency, However as HE President Mahinda stepped in 2005 the Maha Sangha is now in forefront. What ever the Eeamites say this country will not be divided. unitary constitution will stay and if necessary All Sinhalese will come forward as we are very well aware of Diaspora and Sinhala Eelamites their plans with this deshadrohi UNP government

    Des Friday, 04 May 2018 07:17 PM

Can u remember the people who said we will get rid of JR 's executive presidency and preferential votes system during 80's and early 90's?

    Lankan Friday, 04 May 2018 07:27 PM

Hope you are still in the country, the current TNA leadership openly denounce a sepearate country and want solution within the undivided country!

Jaffna Tamil Friday, 04 May 2018 07:51 PM

Do all the Sinhalese support the JVP ? The answer is no. Similarly the educated middle class Jaffna Hindu Tamils do not support division. But we want to be treated as equals that is non negotiable. The LTTE and it’s supporters make less than 20% of the Tamil population.

    Lankan Friday, 04 May 2018 07:28 PM

Who is running the country now?

    Nihal Friday, 04 May 2018 07:42 PM

Except JRJ, No politician have a vision for dacades. We had one and only statesman ie. J R Jayawardane.

    Dhanush Friday, 04 May 2018 08:46 PM

Please abolish maha sangha first and send all fake priests to home

    chandana Saturday, 05 May 2018 11:47 AM

Unfortunately most are not aware of history .Monks are a category saved the country

    K Alagiyawanna Friday, 04 May 2018 08:46 PM

Pressure mounting to bring the old friends
