The government has decided to resume the Constitution-making process which had been at a standstill for a while as a result of the recent political crisis and prorogation of parliament.

The Parliament Steering Committee appointed to draft the new Constitution is scheduled to meet during the first parliamentary week in January. It will take up for discussion a report compiled by the experts' committee appointed to advise the Steering Committee on preparing the draft Constitution.

The Steering Committee consists of members of all the political parties in Parliament. (Kelum Bandara)

New constitution is not a priority, actually not required, if necessary an amendment may be done. Required next year is a presidential and parliamentary elections.

The people of Sri Lanka had better be aware that this is a cunning move to surreptitiously introduce a 'Federal' type of Constitution into Sri Lanka which is a single sovereign, undivided, Unitary Nation. Hence this needs to be opposed at ALL COST. MM

RW doesn't even have a proper majority yet trying to bring about a new constitution. The calamity created by the 19th amendment which was brought in a jiffy is enough to understand the imminent predicament. Please we have more festering issues.

The traitors are hell bent on introduce a new constitution to convert this country to s federal state, which every patriotic citizen should reject.

We need a new constitution to reduce presidential powers and bring better governance and democracy and equal rights to all citizens, not just for favoured people in the city. People who criticise this move are those who don't understand law, human rights and good governance. A new constitution will benefit all people.
