A ten-year-old French boy has died from rabies after he was bitten by a stray puppy while on holiday in Sri Lanka.

The unnamed boy, from Rhone in eastern France, became infected with the virus in August after the dog bit him on a beach in Dikwella in the south of the country.

His family were not initially concerned following the incident, and the boy returned to France.

However, when he began to show signs of the disease, including difficulty swallowing, at the beginning of October, they took him to hospital in Lyon, according to thelocal.fr.

Rabies targets the nervous system and the brain - and while he was in intensive care, his condition continued to deteriorate.

He died on October 16, the Pasteur Institute said.

Around 60 people, including members of the boy's family, along with staff and pupils at his school, have since received a rabies vaccination as a precaution.

Since 1924, there have been not been any cases of 'indigenous' rabies in humans in metropolitan France.

There have been 23 cases of people contracting the condition while abroad since 1970 - the last being three years ago, according to health authorities.

Rabies, a neglected disease of vulnerable populations, is 100 per cent fatal but also nearly 100 per cent preventable through canine vaccination.

Africa and India still bear the highest burden of total annual rabies deaths.

Countries with the highest fatalities from rabies are India, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, China and Myanmar. (Daily Mail)

WHERE ARE THESE ANIMAL RIGHTS PROTECTION GROUPS CONCENTRATING ON STRAY GODS? THIS COUNTRY'S ECONOMY IS ALSO BASED ON TOURISM, THE MOST COMMONLY USED BEACH AREA FROM NEGOMBO TO MATARA HAS TO BE SUPERVISED AND COMBED TO IDENTIFY THE STRAY DOGS AND TO BE VACCINATED !!!! IF THIS CAN BE DONE WE WILL NOT HAVE SUCH INCIDENTS TAKING PLACE ALONG THE BEACH FRONT.AS THE ORGANISATIONS ARE MOBILIZED THEY COULD PROTECT THESE AREAS.

At least now, will Sri Lanka take some serious actions against rabies, politicians and the municipal councils should get some courage and remove the stray dogs and protest the people of the country without fearing for sick and bogus animal lovers. Its a curse that Srilanka is ruined with this bogus emotions of the people, unfortunately politicians and leaders are scared of this bogus emotions.

Your comment alone is telling me how little you know about anything. Compare the cause of deaths:1. Rabies Vs Automobile accidents at any given year.2. Rabies Vs Diarrhoea and gastroenteritis at any given year. 3. Rabies Vs Rape and Murders at any given year.4. Rabies Vs Dengue at any given (recent) year. All above can be prevented 100% but the society is irresponsible in prevention. Don't point fingers.... fix your problems.

    sathees Friday, 20 October 2017 05:40 AM

Human first, let get rid of them once and forever. If BlueCross protests, then let them take care of these dogs.

Must have been bitten by a GMOA

Great now all the iditios in the area will start killing dogs in the area rather than address the issue properly!! This is why the animal welfare bill needs to be passed so that rabies too can be tackled! The government is spending billions on a defence budget we dont need when not a single cent is being allocated to bring down the free rabies vaccination for street dogs that they once used to give! In fact I also found out from a random tuk driver who happened to be a dog lover (Random coz he didnt know I am animal activist) that the vets in state institutions are charging for this free shot coz they are trying to make a buck, so its too expensive for him to afford it. There was a time the government itself had campaigns running to vaccinate dogs but all that is stopped! We also need more sterilization campagins coz no matter how many dogs the government will kill, as long as people keep dumping them on the road, the problem will continue!

Let people die but don't harm animals other than the oneswe can eat.

Jagath Leanage Friday, 20 October 2017 06:59 AM

This news is very bad to our tourist industry . So its high time to think about stray dogs problem by authorities .

    ANTON Friday, 20 October 2017 07:17 AM

THESE DAYS MOST OF THE NEWS ARE ON PUPPIES AND DOGIES. ....... MMMMMM NOT QUIET DIFFERENT FROM POLITIKKAS. SOME ARE GOOD , SOME ARE BAD.

    ali Friday, 20 October 2017 11:53 AM

Bring in some Filipino / Chinese to work here. While they work harder, will take care of stay dog issues also.

    Ravi Friday, 20 October 2017 02:20 PM

How about we have a pork night and make you our guest of honor...wait we will only serve pork in many varieties dishes?

    Dhanapala Friday, 20 October 2017 12:34 PM

And the reason why this is a problem is because: http://www.dailymirror.lk/article/Fifteen-dogs-pups-and-bitch-found-dumped-in-paddy-field-138771.htmlWhen we all start to take responsibility for the animals we keep, then this problem will be solved. Sri Lankan's are quick to claim compassion and kindness but are just as quick not to take responsibility either. If you have a female dog and you dont want the pups, operate her - not dump the pups on the road and add to the problem.

    REEZ Friday, 20 October 2017 02:35 PM

Immediately clean the bitten place with Hydrogen Peroxide. This will kill the germs.

    Arnold Friday, 20 October 2017 03:23 PM

Dog activists are more concerned about dogs than people and the economy. The dog activists should be eliminated along with the stray dogs.

    mario Friday, 20 October 2017 04:21 PM

its time to eliminate all stray dogs from colombo and other places.

    ceylon Friday, 20 October 2017 06:44 PM

sue lanka government for allowing wild dogs on roads. via DM Android App

    Dee Friday, 20 October 2017 08:55 PM

I'm also a dog lover. My street pooch gets much more attention than show dogs. But! We need to control stray dogs. Sympathy aside. Even mother nature neutralizes excessive population by natural disasters. So what is the big fuss? Just control them. The lucky ones will go on. Rest will go off!
