Over 30 passengers have been hospitalized after a private bus plunged into the Jaya Ganga near Thalawa, Thammennawa Pirivena in Anuradhapura earlier this evening.

A spokesman from Thalawa Hospital said that out of the total number injured ten who are in serious conditions have been moved to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. He added that among the injured are women and children and the condition of those being treated at Thalawa Hospital is not serious.

The private bus which was plying towards Hanguranketha Mahaweli Gammanaya had been carrying over forty passengers at the time of the accident through heavy downpour.

Although the villagers had to struggle in getting the injured out of the bus, the relatively low level of water in the river had prevented any loss of life according to an officer attached to the Thalawa police station. Investigations are being conducted by Thambuththegama police.

The drivers of these buses seem to be under the impression the vehicles are capable of being flown in the sky and driven through waterways as well.

Jaya wewa! to all private bus drivers who are out to even kill for the sake of a living...

On the other hand, how do we blame them? Root causes unaddressed is the reason for such tragic incidents. Luckily for the passengers, the water levels of the Jaya Ganga was low!

Recent spate of Bus accidents show that drivers of Public service vehicles are not skilled in driving them. It is high time that a) These drivers sit an advanced competency test
    b) Buses are subject to a safety/suitabilty test yearly
    c) Speed restrictions are imposed on public transport
    d) Increase penalties for overloading, speeding,
dangerous driving and operating vehicles that could
be classed as unsuitable and dangerous.

During the last National new year, i took a train ride from Haputale to Hali-ela, just to see around the scenery, on our way back we got into a 'Special Avurudu service' bus, and i just had a friendly chat with the driver and conductor, what they disclosed to me, i had an instant nervous break down, they told me they haven't slept for 2 whole days.... how is that for a service...i got off at Haputale, and all i could do was to pray for all those inside that bus, which was heading for Colombo.
