Need to do the same for other commodities too.

WHY NOT FOR OTHER LOCALLY GROWN STUFFS?

Encourage local farmers to grow more sustainable/hardy stuff. Import the easily perishable stuff with minimal tax. Every year there is a drought or flooding or something, Sri Lanka is not suited to growing veg, import it.

I have a great idea. Why not raise taxes to 10,000% on everything. Then no one will import anything, and local producers can finally make a living. It will also force out all the foreigners when they realise it really is awful trying to live in rice and curry 3 times a day, leaving more jobs for sri lankans.Of course, the economy will collapse, but hey, its worth it.

    Nice sneer.

Who is sneering?Isn't that what the government wants, tax everything until nothing is imported, except for their own tax free luxury cars?

why cant the local farmers have a fair competition with imported onions ? how can an imported onlion become more cheaper than locally produced onions even after paying import tax ? increasing the tax by 100% is insane. why cant our local farmers play a fair game ?

Unless local farmers able to supply the entire country's demand this is yet another freak from Bogus Yahapalu regime and, further squeezing and perishing the poor middle class working people.
