He claims not to be the greatest captain Sri Lanka has ever produced, giving that title to cricketer-turned-international match referee Ranjan Madugalle, but Arjuna Ranatunga still remains the only skipper to lead a Cricket World Cup winning team, a moment which has changed the country’s cricket for better and worse. After losing the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) elections last year – blaming it on the cricket mafia that controls the voting system – Ranatunga has been a strong critic of the Thilanga Sumathipala-led administration, which he claims is the reason that cricket has reached an all new low following the series whitewashes by India. Ranatunga, in an interview with the , maintained his criticisms of the cricket board, saying he has appealed to President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to intervene and set an ominous tone for the near future of the national team.
