Currently some companies work from 8.30 to 6.00 p.m. as labour gazette is not clear whether the 40 hrs work [er week is including lunch break of 1/2 hr or not. According to labour dept. workday is 8 hrs work + 1/2 or 1 hour break. However employers do not adhere to this nor do they pay for the extra work.
Legalizing the 5 days work is very welcome.
My request is to specify this very clearly in the gazette so that the employers do not exploit the situation.

Totally agree Ruhjan. Surprised it took so long for authorities to figure this out. Maybe everyone was busy trying to change the name to Employers Federation of Sri Lanka.

This is a very good move. Moreover government must also should cut down many unnecessary holidays. See Gulf OTHERTHAN WEEK ENDS there are not more than 10 additional holidays

I think it's a good idea having 5 days of working...
Advantages,
On Saturday people spend almost 3-4hours of travelling to work 5 Hours? This is not productive. And People don't really put their effort to work hard on saturdays so waste of A/C,Electricity, Water, Vehicle Fuel for thousands of Motor Bikes,Vans etc....
It's a superb idea so that people will get their mind refreshed and get back to work in Monday.

Government sector 5 days = one private sector day
Therefore the private sector is always functioning pretty well, and full weekend leave is a must for private sector workers. Meantime, there has to be a mechanism to improve the productivity of govt organizations. Particularly, instead of filling the numbers of vacancies, govt should distribute the workload among the existing staff. Most of the govt organizations are counter productive because of too much of workers, and little bit of work to be done.

I believe that 5 day work week is very productive to the Employer well as the employee than 5 1/2 work week. In Sri Lanka you find it extremely difficult find a organisation that employess put in 8 hours of productive work. I do not understand why some does not want to have additional full day leave?
D.E.M. Ocracy Monday, 17 January 2011 10:07 AM
CERTAINLY MORE PRODUCTIVE. EMPLOYEES WILL BE REFRESHED. EXPLOITERS WILL HAVE NO CHANCE. GO AHEAD AND IMPLEMENT.

So you 'drive' to work? how about you 'riding' a bicycle one day of the week at least?
Sam Monday, 17 January 2011 09:19 AM
This should be done since Saturday is very non-productive. Can increase the work-day by one hour each day to cover for the loss of 4 hours on Saturday. There will be a lot of savings - fuel, energy and people will get some quality time with their families.
