The 1983 Cricket World Cup was perhaps the beginning of the end of the mighty West Indian team of the '90s as their bid for a hat-trick of trophies ended with a shock defeat to the Kapil Dev led Indians. Sri Lanka had an uneventful tournament, finishing last in their group, but not before beating New Zealand by 3 wickets. 

Ashantha de Mel had a sensational tournament, finishing with 17 wickets in six matches, one behind the leading wicket-taker Roger Binny of India.
