A A A

When society fails to inculcate moral values in its children it reflects the decadence of its people. The much sought after miracle of Asia may become one more of the many pariah and lawless states of the world, like the wild west of yesteryear.

We need to reflect seriously on where our country is heading, because it is going to affect our children and grandchildren. Generally we as humans feel that as long as our children develop themselves we need be least bothered about children of other families. This selfishness we learnt, we project to our children. The result is a perpetration of disparities in society creating insecurity.

We heard about the pandemonium at a school in Galle. It had to do with the appointment of a new principal. What was most shocking was that parents, teachers and children were encouraged to attack the principal, damage his car and school property. The Black-Board Jungle of yesteryear was nothing compared to what was witnessed on TV news channels. Bricks and stones, eggs and polythene bags filled with urine were the missiles liberally used. This is one of the many sad incidents that should bring tears to the eyes of those who love this country. We would surely not remember an occasion where our parents or teachers encouraged us to violence especially towards those in authority when in school.

One wonders if these parents are employed in seats of governance. If they can’t govern their children and teachers those they are responsible for, to inculcate correct values and instill moral discipline, then they are not fit to hold parental and teaching responsibility. That’s why a shudder should go through us for what is befalling our people. There are even Government leaders whose children have gone berserk in public places. If they cannot discipline and govern their families they should not be given the reins of governance or management in civil society. We often hear of politicians resorting to physical and sexual abuse of children or women. This could be a result of their not having received a sound moral and disciplined education from parents and teachers.

The redeeming feature coming out of all this is a growing sense of awareness of this sorry state of affairs. We being shocked and disturbed more and more will hopefully awaken us from our lethargic, unconcerned and insensitive stupor. A galvanising of sorts is called for and would be resorted to by parents and teachers, to produce a new breed of leaders this country needs, by responsibly moulding those in their care and custody.

We need leaders who are sincere and unselfish, sacrificial and ready to serve the people without seeking personal gain or glory. Such a moulding needs to be given in the home and school mainly through example.

Since 1994, more than sixty three Parliamentarians have left the Party because of Ranil. People like Rukman Senanayake, the grandson of the founder of the UNP, left because of you. I don’t want to name the others, because the list is too long. Almost one quarter of the present Cabinet is made up of those UNP Parliamentarians, who found you unsuitable to lead this Grand Old Party (GOP).

Very nicely written and explains the exact cancer devouring our society, The lack of moral guidance and discipline by politicians is eating into our society. Is it not the high time that our religious leaders intervene? Looking at the next generation our politicians are breeding, I am sad to see your wish has no chance of survival,
I would like to also mention that what is the rational of newspaper editors dining with president, Once you eat from somebody, You can not criticize him, I think the news paper editors should have more integrity to say no to these buy outs.

MPs who "sacrificed" their careers as ordinary MPs after election, by Crossing Over for portfolios, perks and power, betraying their voters & parties, are the new breed of cut throats in politics.
They have empowered the MR regime to entrench its autocracy & dictatership.
