Accolades for Mahinda and his Son in return for becoming a forgotten soul quite soon.

Dayan Jayatilaka, like other supporters of Mahinda Rajapakse, is reeling under the impact of Mahinda’s defeat in securing the power to rule the country. Dayan is now posing as an impartial analyst talking of a rearguard action by Mahinda to implement the SLFP’s failed non-aligned policies of the 1970s. However, I believe that all Mahinda’s horses and all Mahinda’s men cannot put him in the seat of power in this country once again. Dayan is talking about other Leaders who had been successful in coming into power late in life like De Gaulle, Churchill and JR. However, he fails to mention that De Gaulle came up a second time not through any effort on his part but as a result of the French Generals in Algiers foisting him up into that position. Churchill came into power in 1951 as a result of the dissatisfaction of the British electorate in the ruling party , a normal phenomenon there.

The only valid example in Dayan’s article is is JR. According to Dayan Mahinda “he is still younger than J.R. Jayewardene was when he first led Sri Lanka”. This is a deliberate misrepresentation by Dayan. He cannot compare the date when JR won the election in 1977 with Mahinda’s position today, a mere backbencher in the opposition in Parliament. The least he could have done was to have compared Mahinda’s age today(70yrs) with JR’s age in 1970 (64 yrs) when he became Leader of the Opposition and started the fight back of the UNP. Mahinda is now 70 years old. He cannot take any “rearguard action” until he becomes the Leader of the SLFP. He is unlikely to achieve this any time soon, with Maithripala at the helm. Whatever Dayan’s hopes I believe that the “rearguard action” referred to by him will not see the light of day for want of a Leader.
