The cynics argue that having raped, plundered and pillaged the planet we are now settling for token band-aids by espousing these causes and that they will not staunch the bleeding.
Fair enough but if we have to get the message across, there has to be a messenger and Earth Hour is a very swift one. It has a comet like build up of weeks and creates awareness on two levels. The first is personal where you do, even if it is for a brief time, realise that you have a role to play, that every individual does count.
On the macro-level you feel you are part of a global movement, it brings us all closer to each other and places us on a common platform creating a consensus of opinion that squandering our resources leaves a very poor legacy for the future.
So, things are getting done and those who did light a candle or switch off their lights or walked the walk will agree that at the end of it there was a fair sensation of accomplishment and a lesson well taught to our children.
The importance of that cannot be underplayed.
