We are proud of our President and this government which has saved this country from being divided despite the efforts of certain western countries seeking to use the UN Security Council and the UNGA ‘Resolution R2P to save Prabhakaran and to continue the separatist war. The President has given us a peace which we have not enjoyed in thirty plus years in this country. Today his government is engaged in the process of stabilization with the assistance of friendly countries. This effort of the government MUST be protected; it should take care not to be taken for a ride by self-seeking scoundrels.
I, who has supported this administration and the President even before he was elected in 2004 (I am sorry that Joseph Pararajasingham is not around to testify) and made a significant contribution even recently when I was able to arrange for our President to speak on the telephone to Prime Minister Naguib to ensure that Malaysia abstained on the crucial vote in the UNHRC in Geneva on that resolution against Sri Lanka, at a time when the hardline pro-LTTE Tamils here were demanding that Malaysia vote for the Resolution or lose the support of Tamils in Malaysia in the General Election which is around the corner. I have revived the Malaysian-Sri Lanka Joint Commission which was a dead letter after 2006 when HC Casie Chetty ended his tour of duty, without offence to modesty I could state without fear of contradiction that I have achieved much more in the eight months that I have served here than some in years.
Hence it was that I was deeply shocked and saddened when I was informed that I had been recalled. I inquired as to the reason for this extreme act of been Recall but was never favoured with a reply. It would be in keeping with natural justice to inform me of why I was been recalled ---- many, both in Malaysian Diplomatic circles and government have asked me what I had done to be given capital punishment, for in all responsible democracies no head of Mission is recalled unless he or she has committed a serious faux pas. My responding that I was’ not aware made many smile --- for some unknown reason has my reputation been tarnished after over 37 years of loyal service to our country and our people. I came out of retirement to serve only because I thought that I had it me to utilize my many years of experience to serve, and alas this has been my reward. There has been conjecture in certain circles that my recall was as a result of a question I raised at a recent Workshop for heads of Missions in Diyatalawa --- I did think so myself on receiving the order but again I did on reflection have my doubts as I could not come to terms with associating such a harsh act with an intellectual of the caliber of Prof. G.L. Peiris who would have understood my question even if it was not better worded. He would also know that it is the fundamental duty of a professional diplomat to give a feedback of the thinking in the country he is serving. I am now told that I was being Recalled as I was sympathetic to the hard line Tamil Diaspora here, if this is true nothing can be more ridiculous for not many have been critical of the LTTE than I have and I have the printed articles to prove it. As a Diplomat representing a country it is my duty to talk not only to those favourable to us but to engage with persons opposed to us to seek to win them over, but apparent this has been misunderstood and deliberately misrepresented. I would be failing in my duty if I do not flag the fact of the excellent work done here by Gen. Udaya Perera who had related to all and brilliantly pulled an almost miracle ---having had KP the LTTE’S chief arms procurer brought to Sri Lanka. If I am being recalled for been “sympathetic” to the hardline Tamils, then it is indeed a cruel despicable lie for which I am being punished without a fair trial, causing a huge disruption to my life and putting an end to my efforts on behalf of our country. Our President should be extremely careful for his good-nature can be used, nay craftily exploited by self-seeking scoundrels to harm our country and achieve their own selfish ends.
May no one ever subject himself or herself to this humiliating without due process. A senior Buddhist monk who sought to console me said--- “there is vipaka for every Karma or Act, so rest assured that those who did this to you will regret their actions before long”.
