Two sisters aged 19 and 20 were arrested with counterfeit currency notes valued Rs. 20,500 at a supermarket at Saranankara Road in Dehiwala yesterday.
They were arrested on a tip off received by the Kohuwala Police.
According to the police, the management of the supermarket had informed the police as they noticed that the women had counterfeit notes in their possession. The women had tried to pay bills using Rs. 500 counterfeit notes to purchase sugar.
Police recovered 41 counterfeit currency notes of Rs. 500 denomination from the women’s possession.
Investigation revealed that the notes had been printed with different serial numbers.
Investigation are underway to arrest the mastermind behind the counterfeit currency racket who was believed to be at the location when the women were arrested.
The women who are residents of Colombo 10 were to be produced in the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court.
