The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday launched its youth wing ‘Samagi Taruna Balawegaya with a promise to bring in legislation to ensure 25 percent youth representation in all elected bodies including Parliament.
Both SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa and Samagi Taruna Balawegaya head Mayantha Dissanayake made this pledge at the launch of the youth wing yesterday.
“We will bring in legislation to ensure 25 percent youth representation in Parliament and in other elected bodies,” Mr. Premadasa said.
“ Our government brought in legislation to ensure 25 percent women representation in local bodies but failed to do it in an effective manner. We will ensure proper representation for youth and women in a more professional way,” he said.
“ Office bearers for Samagi Taruna Balawegaya will be elected by a ballot and no one who is close the party leader will be appointed for it as in the case of the UNP led Jathika Yovun Peramuna,” he added.
Also he said the SJB will set up vocational training centres and IT institutes for youth in all divisions elected to office.
Former President of UNP led Jathika Yovun Peramuna Kavinda Jayawardene was also present at the launch.
