The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said yesterday it would reveal its presidential candidate on August 11 and that the candidate would be someone who had a bachelors degree and a vision apart from experience and other qualifications.
MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardane told a news conference that it would be a politician who can successfully face any crisis, take control of the country’s future and could be trusted. “Our candidate will not have any obstacles such as the GCE O/L qualifications unlike the United National Party (UNP). The UNP candidate’s qualification has been lowered to the level of GCE O/L and the ministers say they are not mad enough to field someone who has not even passed the GCE O/L examination as their presidential candidate,” he said. Meanwhile, the MP said the government was suffering from three phobias today -- the presidential election, the general election and the provincial council election.
“We hope an election will be held soon. Regardless of what it is, we are ready to face any election. The people are eagerly awaiting an election,” he said.
