Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday questioned the rationale behind govenment’s decision to partially lift the lockdown on May 11 2020.
SJB candidate and former MP Wijepala Hettiarachchi and former MP Kumara Welgama came up with this question at a press conference last morning.
“We are suspicious about the data on COVID-19 infections put out by the government. It is also questionable whether the government makes decisions based on advise from health experts,” Mr. Hettiarachchi said.
“We are also suspicious with regard to the number of COVID-19 deaths. Authorities have claimed that some deaths have been caused due to other aliments but those whom they claimed to have died from various other aliments have been interred the same way in which COVID-19 patients are interred,” he said.
Mr. Welgama said the ruling party politicians should follow the instructions given by the WHO chief who had called for collective effort of all political parties in countries to fight COVID-19. The present government in Sri Lanka is continuously violating the constitution in the same way they did in October 2018.
“I asked Prime Minister Rajapaksa not to accept the premiership in October 2018. However he would not listen. The Supreme Courts later decided that it was an illegal move. Same will happen once again,” Mr Welgama said.
