Colombo Magistrate Shalani Perera yesterday released Mahasohon Balakaya leader Amith Weerasinghe on personal bail with two sureties of Rs.1 million each when he was produced in Court.
When granting bail she warned the suspect to refrain from posting hate messages on Facebook or spread hate speech which would create communal disharmony.
The Magistrate observed that the suspect was arrested by the Colombo South Special Police Crime Investigating Unit under Emergency Regulations and the Public Protection Act and that the the charges against the suspect were offences that could be taken up by a Magistrate.
She said the Police in their report filed in court had not disclosed why the suspect should not be remanded under the Emergency Regulations and as such she presumed that the suspect could be granted bail. Counsel Senaka Ullandupitiya with Tharindu Dawakella appeared for Amith Weerasinghe. The case was fixed for July 2.
