The former SLFP chairman of Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha P. P. Wikramasinha was sentenced to 6 months rigorous imprisonment by the Mawanella Magistrate Upul Rajakaruna yesterday for obstructing the duties of Hemmathagama police officers.
He had been accused of threatening the police officers including the former Hemmathagama OIC Dhammika Kandewatta who had gone to arrest him following information that he was running a mobile saw mill without a valid licence.
Later he was arrested by the Hemmathagama police with the help of the Aranayaka and Mawanella police.
Legal action was taken against him and three employees of the illegal saw mill. The three employees were imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 each while the former Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman was sentenced to imprisonment.
