The Navy rescued a sea turtle in the Thal Sewana beach area in Kankesanthurei yesterday morning. Accordingly, an injured full grown sea turtle washed to the reefs of Thal Sewana beach area was rescued by the Navy. After bringing the rescued animal to the shore, it was handed over to the Department of Wildlife Conservation - Kilinochchi Regional Office for further treatment.
There are seven species of sea turtles that are listed as endangered, of which five are found off the coast of Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, to protect these endangered species, naval personnel are constantly working on several sea turtle conservation projects under ‘Neela Haritha Sangramaya’, a visionary concept of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva.
