first full trailer gives a glimpse of the DC superhero

Streaming service DC Universe released the first full trailer for its upcoming Swamp Thing series

The character has been featured in two poorly received films and a television series from the 1980s and ‘90s. On Tuesday, streaming service DC Universe released the first full trailer for its upcoming Swamp Thing series. The plant-based comic book hero is briefly seen, as an mysterious sickness sweeps a small Louisiana town. The footage opens on a pale young girl in the middle of class. Her attention wanders as she notices her nose is bleeding, but she collapses shortly after trying to stand up. The action shifts to a medical camp in an unnamed country, where Dr. Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) is helping the victims of a sickness.

'Atlanta called — there’s a situation back in the States,’ her companion says. ‘Where?’ she says, before glancing at the file he hands her. ‘You’re kidding,’ she gasps, realising the situation is in her own hometown of Houma, Louisiana. The pair, having arrived back in Louisiana, drive the streets of the city, before the trailer cuts to a rowdy church crowd.

The Reverend tries to calm his anxious parishioners from the pulpit. ‘We don’t know what this is yet. The hospital is on it 24/7, and the CDC!’ he shouts. As he speaks, we see Abby surveying the quarantine field hospital, where the little girl and other people afflicted with the mysterious illness are being treated.

The undead? The sickness seems to be zombifying the city's residents, as a dirty, bedraggled woman surprises Abby from her bedside

DC Universe released the first Swamp Thing full trailer. The plant-based comic book hero is briefly seen, as an mysterious sickness sweeps a small Louisiana town

A montage shows her in scrubs as she removes some kind of plant matter that appears to have been removed from the little girl. ‘My team is here to find the source of this disease,’ she tells the other doctors.

Seeking more information, Abby visits a house by the swamp, where she and an accompanying Sheriff’s deputy make a grisly discovery: the body of a standing man that’s held up by vines that have grown through his mouth and anchored him in place. The fast-growing plants have also spread throughout the house. ‘You saw the body. Dealt with anything like that before?’ asks a man outside the house, who identifies himself as Alec Holland (Andy Bean). In voice-over, Abby says that Holland was ‘investigating illegal dumping on this swamp,’ as we see him set upon by someone in the swamp in the middle of the night.

There’s an explosion, suggesting something terrible has happened to him. Next, the show’s antagonists are introduced. Dr.Jason Woodrue (Kevin Durand) vehemently denies that his ‘accelerant is responsible’ for what is happening in town as Avery Sunderland (Will Patton) informs him that the CDC is investigating. Meanwhile, the sickness seems to be intensifying. Abby’s partner from the CDC collapses, with flecks of green liquid coming out of his mouth, and a woman wading through the swamp screams, ‘You should be dead!’ as she pushes Abby under the water. There’s been a shift in the balance of the light and dark. Something’s out there,’ says a blind woman, suggesting this is more than a mere chemical spill. The sickness seems to be zombifying the city’s residents, as a dirty, bedraggled woman surprises Abby from her bedside.

‘There’s all kinds of awful that happen in this swamp,’ says Jennifer Beals, who plays the Sheriff. Meanwhile, the Swamp Thing has been spotted, and Woodrue is desperate to capture and study it. The trailer ends on a quick montage of gruesome images and rapidly-growing vines that burst through walls and windows. As a suspicious looking man rides a boat through the swamp, we get the first good look at Swamp Thing (Derek Mears) as the green plant-based creature roars to life behind him. Swamp Thing arrives May 31 on the DC Universe streaming service.
