It was the only way and there was no other choice but to clamp a curfew to make sure our citizens would not be infected by the coronavirus. Controlling the spreading of this virus was handled extremely well and most of us agree that the National Forces and the dedicated medical teams and the Ministry of Health should be credited for this. At the same time, the Colombo Municipal Council continued to do their good work by ensuring that the city was clean, including regular collection of garbage throughout the curfew. Private enterprise made sure that no one starved during the shutdown.
Being locked up at home brought out lots of good things in people. Many realised their hidden talents and had a great time cooking, repairing things around the house, cleaning out cupboards and discarding stuff
Being locked up at home brought out lots of good things in people. Many realised their hidden talents and had a great time cooking, repairing things around the house, cleaning out cupboards and discarding stuff, redoing their own gardens and many other wonderful things which they would never have thought of doing on any other mundane busy day. Naturally, there also were the undisciplined lot who were running around breaking the law during curfew and were dealt with accordingly. One wonders why they needed to be loafing around as this curfew was for everyone’s personal well-being.
Whilst all of this was going on many people took advantage by rooking people off with raising prices of essential commodities and many other items and scams on the internet. Fortunately, most of them were dealt with the Consumer Affairs Authority. It is quite common that people try to take advantage in these circumstances. Many of those who depend on daily wages suffered, while the fortunate were helped by their employers and good Samaritans, many who were happy to extend a helping hand.
The curfew has been relaxed now to get the country’s economy going with many safety guidelines in place. It is each person’s responsibility finally to look after him or herself. Even though it is more relaxed now we should take precautions and practise all safety guidelines. Let us live in great hope that a vaccine will be developed, and life could get back to the normal as we have known. Till then stay safe.
Did this crisis make us better conscientious human beings, both personally and environmentally? We will know when the country gets back to normal.
