People were taxed even during the time of King Parakramabahu, although it was criticized today, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said at the 52nd Aluth Sahal Mangalaya at Jaya Srimaha Bodhi in Anurdhapura this morning.

“King Parakramabahu used impose tax on people, especially when harvest was high. Therefore, remember that King Parakramabahu also imposed VAT before criticising,” he said in a lighter vein.

The Prime Minister stressed Sri Lanka’s paddy production had been 3 million metric tons this year. This he said was one of the highest harvests in the history.

President Maithripala Sirisena was the chief guest of the event although he did not address the gathering. (Yohan Perera and Athula Bandara in Anuradhapura)

I i must tell you in first place your not the Prakrambahu. I fully agreed government should collect the taxes to meet the social expenditure and the capital expenditure but i don't think King would have misused the taxpayers money like you all.

Tax is not being criticized, it is the corruption and due to it the loss being borne on people in the name of Tax. whilst high ranking robbers and drug dealers the state intervenes and protects. You and predecessors other than the British ruined our future

Lord Wolfstein Monday, 08 April 2019 09:05 AM

If there had been good and not corrupt politicians in Sri Lanka after independence, we would have a tax of 20% and a VAT of 7% today as in Singapore.

But we didn't import everything and exported our citizen during that era did we?

Kings were primitive in nature, they not only taxed but ruled authoritatively

But King Parakramabahu did not rob the citizens.
