Development Strategies and International Trade Minister Malik Samarawickrema said yesterday he would be leaving for Oman on May 4th together with Petroleum Resources Development Minister Kabir Hashim, for discussions with regard to the Hambantota Oil Refinery.
Responding to a question raised by UPFA MP D.V. Chanaka, he told Parliament that they were leaving on a request made by Oman's Oil Minister.
If the project was still under discussion, MP Chanaka questioned why the foundation stone was laid before it was finalised.
He said Deputy Minister Nalin Bandara had mentioned it would take about six months before the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report was received and asked how the project was started without the EIA report.
MP Chanaka said that according to foreign media the investor had said it would take an year to finalise the project and it is yet to recruit partners and conduct an assessment of the viability of this project.
"This project is also similar to that of the Volkswagen Factory. The foundation was laid without an EIA report or an investor," he said.
The minister responded saying that they had acted according to the proposal received by the Board of Investment (BOI). (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Good ,spend tax payers money and have a nice time.If the Oman government or any one else want to invest, they should come to Sri Lanka with their money, because one day they will be taking the profits to their countries. To begin with the Indian investor is a crook according to the S.L. T.V.investigations. I am sure the Sri Lankan voters are a little more intelligent than four years ago. This man is confused. We need someone who is from a co-operate background to to replace him. Foundation stone first and negotiations later. My foot. Utterly incompentant.

Aladdin is arriving on his flying carpet to take the delegation to Oman on the instruction of the BOI sri lanka. Lack of words and out of the excitement oil minister casually mentioned the trip to Oman to further discuss the fake project. As always as the cart before the horse ... Kabir and Malik are ready to explore the possibilities of major embezzlement's .... Do they still think that this (oil refinery) is really taking place ?

If the EIA report is negative for the location, move the Moolgala to another location. If no DEAL is finalized within a year or so just let scrub grow over the Moolgala! The main thing IS the Moolgala!
