The Prisons Department is expected to introduce a new mobile jamming system to prevent inmates from using mobile phones while in prisons, Prisons Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya said.

He said the main target of introducing the jamming system is to make mobile phones a useless electronic device in the prison.

"The personnel who smuggle in mobile phones into the prison resort to various methods. However, we managed to seize those mobile phones but now the smugglers use more advanced methods to smuggle in mobile phones," the Prisons Commissioner General said.

“We can only beat this issue by using advanced technology,” he said.

“Therefore, we discussed this issue with the President, the Subject Minister and Prison officials to put an end to this threat with the use of latest technology. Installing high-tech equipment in prisons is much needed to prevent smuggling in mobile phones,” Mr. Upuldeniya added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Well! There is no system that criminals can not find a workaround to bypass restrictions, as long as there are no corrupt free prison officers.

Absolute humbug. Go into prison section by section

No use. The drug dealer will pay small amount to turn it off while he is making the calls (prison guards will receive santhosam no matter what). Don’t waste money on jammers

If the officers and jail ours here honest then you don't need any jammers. By using such instruments could cause difficulties to the surrounding people and later it will be an excuse for the officials to do away with it.

    Chris Thursday, 11 June 2020 08:16 PM

They will disable the jamming devices by bribing the officials, use the phones and bring the jammers back on again. No one will be wiser. Only way stop mobiles going in, for three months use STF to take over prisons

Will it be applied equally to all politicians also whenever they are special guests of the State?

    Mohanan Thursday, 11 June 2020 08:43 PM

Are they using drones to drop mobile phones inside the prison?

    Lawry Friday, 12 June 2020 05:22 AM

Good question. What are the sophisticated methods used to smuggle in phones? Bring it in batth packets?

    Patrick Thursday, 11 June 2020 08:44 PM

There is no discipline amongst prison officers. If you jam the mobiles what about drugs. Will you also jam the drugs ? There should be zero tolerance policy - and strong punishment if any banned items are found within the prison premises.

In the 1960s I remember reading a line of articles in the Silumina newspaper(if my memory is correct)written by a convicted prisoner named (capt)Perera about malpractices in the prison.these may have increased due to the incre ase of number of prisoners, new drugs, money’s involved and new technology and greed.
