Following a statement made by Colombo Mayoress Rosy Senanayake which claimed that the Aruwakkalu is a failed project, the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development has decided to discontinue accepting municipal solid waste to the partially completed Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill with effect from today.

In a statement issued by the Ministry it said that the Ministry has taken all steps to resolve the solid waste management disposal issue complying all rules and regulations and environmental guidelines. “As a result the only large scale sanitary landfill facility is nearing completion.

Having identified the non-availability of a waste disposal facility in the Colombo Municipal Council area, we have come across a solution, which is the partial completion of sanitary landfill at Aruwakkalu, enabling Colombo municipal waste to be delivered without making a further environmental hazard to the Kerawalapitiya site.

Moreover, the Kerawalapitiya site has come to its full capacity and there is no possibility of dumping garbage at Kerawalapitiya further,” said Ministry secretary Eng. Nihal Rupasinghe.

It further said that the only solution for waste disposal is the partially completed Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill.

When contacted by the Daily Mirror, Colombo Mayoress Rosy Senanayake said that it was subject minister Patali Champika Ranawaka and Vajira Abeywardene who stopped the Wanathawilluwa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman from collecting ransom. “What was said was that there has been a failure in the dumping site resulting in an explosion and we are unable to transport garbage to Aruwakkalu.” (Kamanthi Wickramasinghe)
